Simon Dawson is the new drummer

I posted this in the tour thread, but it feels more appropriate here:

With the caveat that I watched the show on my phone from a live stream, I was impressed by Simon. I like that his drumming is his own style while still serving the songs as performed by Nicko and Clive.

I also appreciate that he has a smaller, less flashy kit. It would’ve been absurd for him to copy Nicko’s kit and the graphics.

Simon did a great job based on the clips I've seen so far. It's definitely interesting to see someone else behind the drums again, especially since he doesn’t have a massive drum kit blocking the view like Nicko usually does.

I realise that my comment in the tour thread

He's a non-presence, which is what was expected since the announcement. It's not exactly the same as if Portnoy was replaced by Phil Rudd, but it's not exactly different to me either.

It's okay when the drums aren't important, but when they are, it's kinda meh. SETLIST SPOILER: The only good section (the closing one) of SSOASS is really weak as a result and they could spend the whole ten minutes better, methinks.

(whether that's bashing, you decide)
probably came off as unnecessarily hostile.

But in general, from someone who's obsessed with Nicko (like, not interested in the band very much without him), he's okay. Has an ungrateful job, does it well, most of the time it's really okay for me, wouldn't skip the tour because of him (which was my first knee-jerk reaction to the announcement). All the power to him, really.
