Simon Dawson is the new drummer

Sure, this guy, a "real expert", who doesn't even look young for his age, just like a normal guy of his age who works out a lot.

However, competent medical advice really makes a big difference, that's just the way it is.
He's a tech millionare dedicating his life and his money to live as long as he possibly can. He doesn't work anymore, he just does this. He's an excentric, to say the least.

I remember in 2013 when Charlie Charlesworth was the drum technician of Simon with British Lion. Do you think he will continue his job with Maiden/Simon?

How can he be the drummer without playing drums for the band?
By receiving a paycheck on which it states he's the drummer? :D

Ace Frehley was only allowed to record guitar for a single track on Psycho Circus (IIRC), yet he was officially the guitarist of the band.

Hell, the ex-bassist for Bullet For My Valentine has never recorded any bass parts for the studio albums, because those are always done by their rhythm guitarist and singer.

What started as a joke response can be summarized as: Band dynamics can be super weird.

Both of your examples include musicians who perform live with the band though. Unless Nicko records on an album or plays on stage with Maiden in some capacity, neither of which there is any realistic expectation for, he is not the drummer for Iron Maiden.

Fair point. That said, we don't know if he won't participate in some special shows in limited capacity in the future. Or provide recordings for potential studio work, at least to some degree. I suppose we'll have to see how they'll handle this situation in the next couple of years.

Doing the whole "he's still in the band, just not playing with us (live, but it's not like we're heading into the studio any time soon, so...)" I feel was a bit of a miscalculation, since honestly it sets expectations.

If they never record another album then Nicko is de facto not in the band, as in he's not involved in any way on the drumming side of things. If they do and Nicko can't perform for some or even all of the tracks, we're still at the same or a similar situation where the band has a permanent drummer who barely plays with them at all and a touring drummer who does all or most of the actual drumwork.

It feels wrong. Had they done a clean break, Nicko coming back in some capacity for a studio track or two for example would instead be a massive pleasant surprise to everyone, but now it feels more like the bare minimum. Bands shouldn't have emeritus positions.
