Official Hockey discussion thread

Vegas? seriously? Vegas proper is NOT large enough, it is a VERY small stinky town, the rest of Vegas is a huge tourist attraction, so unless TOURISTS go to hockey games regularly, they'll be fucked again.

That's how the Panthers sell tickets.  And Vegas has over half a million people, more than enough for a hockey team.
So who's in for another Fantasy Draft this year?

Hartford had a team for awhile and they barely had a population of 100,000 people. Vegas is an owners dream because it is a tourist destination. Plus it has no major professional sports franchise. Any pro sports team would make a killing from corporate sponsorship and corportae owned luxary box seats.

That and Vegas could have a natural rivalry with Phoenix (ha, ha).

I think all pro leagues are weary of an association with LV and gambling. They prefer to to turn a blind eye and that's a bit harder when you're playing slots in the airport.

Jerry Bruckheimer has been said to be very interested in bringing an NHL team to Vegas, and he owns a lot of Vegas properties.

I can see it now! The anthem sung by an Elvis impersonator, the Vegas "Ice Girls" are hookers from the Bunny Ranch, the announcer is a bouncer at Ceasar's, the Zamboni a bartender from the Palms and the Organist is local boy sensation Jonny Smuckers Mckenzee! Yeah... I'd go to a game like that.... NOT!

The Phoenix rivalry did make me laugh though :)

I agree relocation is the way to go at this point. Time to move failed/unpopular teams.

I think given the failure of Phoenix and the probable failure of Atlanta in the next 5 years, the League will not be expanding for some time.

Teams in non traditional markets have to be winning teams to be popular and successful. L.A needed Gretzkey along with half of the old Oilers squad (the other half ended up in New York) to finally make hockey stick in Cali. The Ducks sucked so bad for so long Disney (unwisely) got fed up and sold them. PHoenix, even after making the playoffs for their first 7 seasons in Arizona weren't exactly popular. Florida has one VERY lucky run to the cup and people haven't given a shit since then. I insist Tampa got very lucky in winning the cup. I thought Carolina had gotten lucky too, but they've had several good runs, including their Cup year. They should just go back to Hartford.

The Great One has quit as coach for the Phoenix Coyotes.  Given the fact the team is moving anyway, his job was not secure.  The 2,000 of so fans left in Metro Phoenix were no pleased with him anyway because his been a no-show at practices.  In a typical Gretzky fashion, he ended his last hours as an official coach with a diplomatic nod to both Phoenix and Hamilton areas saying that a NHL franchise could be successful in either or.

As a Devils fan I have to say, with great relish, Phoenix: what a Mickey Mouse organization!

It's a terrible organization, and it's really put paid to the myth that you can have hockey in areas that don't want hockey.  Build it all you want, but they shall not come.

I'm excited for the Blues. A healthy Kariya, a tank on D, reminescent of Pronger's days a Blues :) The Cap Era is seeing more and more benefits each season, the parity between most clubs truly makes it anyone's season.

I thought players were going back to normal size. good thing he is a D Man. Imagine the damage he could inflict if he was a winger.
