Official Hockey discussion thread

Gretzky has had a "young team" since my senior year in high school... Therrien turned the pens around in three seasons, Gretz has had over FIVE and has done squat. When I go to a Coyotes' game it's to watch the opposing team.

As for Melrose, Tampa will indeed honor the remainder of his contract according to NHL.com.

So, I'm probably gonna jinx myself, but I'm not doing too badly in the Hockey League.  Which is nice, cause I'm sucking ass in my NFL league-- tho did finish in the top 10 in Nascar (I scored the 3rd most points in the second half--horrible first half).

Meh, I'm sure it won't last.

What the hell on the Blues?! I blame Sarah Palin.

I'm doing ok for my first time. I have three injured players though :( two DTD and one IR that I can't dump, grrrr. I feel like taking a crow bar to fighting mongoose's knee though :p that fucker took the first spot and hasn't let up!

Yeah, he has done pretty well so far.  Tho, something I was commenting on to LC the other day, you only have a limited amount of games to play, so its kinda hard to judge till you get closer to the end of the season, depending on how many games he has played.  I have been running +2 on F, +1 on G, and -2 on D.

I have 2 D's that are hurt right now, so I can't play them, and Broduer is hurt for a while, and I think I'm stuck with him.... if one more of my goalies goes down, I'm toast...

Gretzky is a fairly new coach and young players take time to develop. I might be mistaken, but this is only his 2nd full season behind the bench. As for the dibacle down in Tampa, the Lightning were bought by a movie producer, and are run by Len Barrie, who was a never was in the NHL, and Brian Lawton who was hired after the Lightning hired Melrose.

He's on his 4th full season. He's had 3 losing record seasons under his belt. Not by much... well the worst was a 31-46-5 record... the others aren't THAT bad, but losing record and missed playoffs. So yeah, I was a tad harsh on him, the Coyote's have had a young team for 6 years or so, but Gretzky has only been there for the last 3.

Tampa Bay shouldn't even exist. That list includes, Phoenix, the Panthers, San Jose, Anaheim (does a state really need 3 teams two hours from each other? sure NY has three too, but at least it snows there.), Carolina can go back to Hartford and Canada should get more teams too, at least people attend games up there.

Shit I must be geting old. He's really been behind that bench for 4 years?  I really think Pheonix should get some better players. I think they should fold 4 teams and relolcate 2 to Canada. Get rid of the entire Southleast  Division and keep the Capitals.

Anyone watch Monday's Canadiens/ Islanders game. O'Bryne was playing the puck on a delayed penalty, Price was on the bench. Being pressured by the Islanders, he played it into his own net. I think the play should have been blown dead before, because Bill Guerin played the puck, and he was even credited with the goal. I thin Guy Carboneau made matters a little worse by benching O'Byrne for the remainder of the game.

On another note, during the Phoenix/ Rangers game, Brandon Dubinsky pulled a Gordie Howe Hatrick. This was his second career Gordie. Maybe he can become the alltime leader. Shanny is the current unofficial record holder, with 9  Gordie Howe Hatricks.

OK, seriously here:  I have Brodeur as my 3rd goalie (being able to start only 2), and he is on IR until Feb.  As it stands, since I can only start the two I have, I'm short on my estimated total games played by goalies.

Would you keep Brodeur and wait for him to get back on the ice in Feb, or go ahead and boot him from the team, and pick up the next best avail option?  Looks like Ellis fron Nashville is the next best bet (stat-wise).

Go for it. I've dumped a few IR folks. They finally let me dump Gaborik, only took them 30 freakin' games... gees. just keep an I out for when he comes back, because he might be nabbed by someone else...

Also, anybody else find the circus made out of the Avery situation ridiculous? So he bad-mouthed his ex, so what? Now he's in anger management for that? Give me a break.

Thanks for the advice... that is my biggest concern, that I dump him, and can't get him back...

Yeah, the Avery stuff is just a joke.  Bettman is just a r-tard, and the Stars are trying to pretend that they are so 'socially acceptable' and dump him.  Circus indeed.

No.  The Avery situation is exactly what is it supposed to be.  You guys are used to stars like Terrell Owens and...I dunno, fucking Dennis Rodman or whoever the modern equivalent is mouthing off like this.

It doesn't happen in hockey.  Ever.  I hope Avery ends up in Russia for the rest of his career.  When he mouths off over there, he'll get shown what a rough life really is.  Avery's a dick, and he acted like a dick, and the NHL is saying that you can't do that and have the privilege of playing for them.  It makes perfect sense to me.

This is why hockey is my favorite sport. If a player disrepects his team or his sport, he is dealt with swiftly and severely. I'm suprised that the veterans let the young players run their mouths so much to begin with. In the old days, a player had to have a couple of seasons under his belt before they were even ackowledged.

A lot of that is a move towards team-building instead of enforcement by the vets.  It's one of the reason young captains are becoming more and more acceptable (Crosby, Nash, Toews, etc).  In my opinion, Avery is one of the big reasons why the Stars have been terrible this year - his attitude has really broken the team apart.  Richards, Modano, Morrow, Turco, the hearts of the team couldn't stand the guy.

I am not used to rodman or owens or dicks in general. I still think it's ridiculous, not the punishment, but the attention it's getting.

I think that Bettman wants it to get attention.  That way he can say "See us?  The NHL has 'bad boys' too, and I can control them!"

In that case how come Chris Simon still manages to get signed?
Sundin is a Canuck!!! Looks like he likes Canada hahaha. I think that's awesome. Not only do I think he'll be a great asset to the Canucks, but it's a great place to continue his career.

Simon hasn't ever said anything about his girlfriend, though.

And Sundin takes the money.  ESPN had a really cynical article on it that I tend to agree with.  Probably the number of Swedes going on in Vancouver had something to do with it.

Well, I broke down and pitched Brodeur-- my #1 Goalie went DTD, so I had to have another starter... ug.

His still a dick and a thug on the ice and gets suspended repeatedly for the same shit (cross checks to the face, cheap shots after whistles... etc)

So what if he's going for the money? He has been around long enough and has been good enough to afford that luxury. Sure I have more respect for those that take a cut in pay just for the honor of playing (read Sakic), but if you are good at what you do and get paid for it, why not go for the gold? Plus it is a good club with a good chance of making it to the playoffs.
