NOW WATCHING

Where are you watching these eps, Judas? Netflix, DVDs, Blu-ray? If you can get a hold of the new HD transfers, Netflix US has them or get the Blu-rays, you'll be astounded at how quickly that "90's feel" seems to not matter.

Also, don't know if you'll care, but I made a Tumblr for continuity goofs/errors/silliness for virtually every episode last year when I did my rewatch. You'll have to go to the archive to start at the beginning, but it might give you a chuckle: http://wtfxfileshd.tumblr.com/archive

So far I'm relying on DVDs (I still have the first two seasons). After that, I guess I'll probably start downloading the rest and buy the Blu-Ray boxset I've seen in the store last week sometime later.

You see, the thing is, Netflix has a lot of problems in Czechia so far (and TXF are not even available on it) and when we were moving, we had to sell both the TV and the XBox.

That means I can't even re-watch Sopranos and Breaking Bad, since I have both on Blu-Ray and thus I have currently no means to play those. We intend to buy another TV and probably the new XBox as soon as possible (probably around October), but I'm waiting with the TXF box until then.

That Tumblr is downright creepy. :D Will try to go through it, but so far it only brought my Firefox to a Beach Ball of Death :D

BTW - is it true they made Mulder into a 9/11 truther in the reboot? I mean, I guess it's probably in character, but still...

Whoa there! I loved X-Files as a kid, but that's some serious geekactivity there, Knicks. Right on! :ok:

Yeah, probably the geekiest thing I've done since writing fanfic at 15, but it was actually quite nice and forced me to pay closer attention to every episode - especially the bad ones.

If you download them (legally or not so much), you'll probably get the HD versions. Seriously, the difference in quality is astounding. The show was shot so spectacularly that the transfers just enhance everything. Other than the pantsuits. Nothing can change the pantsuits.

Good luck on getting a new TV/Blu-ray. I heartily recommend the Blu-ray set, even though it was one of the hardest purchases I've ever had to make. I bought every season of the show when it was originally out and they were $90-110 a season!

As for Mulder...yes, they do. I don't want to spoil later seasons for you, but part of the reason why I embraced Robert Patrick's character in Season 8 and 9 is because of the absurdity of what they do with Mulder, be it onscreen or off. The reboot is, I don't know, very problematic.

Oh, and speaking of hand models:

So, after nearly 5 months, we finally finished Mad Men today. And it was really good, mind you, but...

1.) It's not a series to binge-watch, IMHO. Without the necessary pauses, it would be a real bore to suffer through. I might like the characters, the setting, the storylines, even... but even two episodes every day kind of wear you down.

2.) The finale might have been much better. I mean, you have all these characters you could write a send-off to and you spend most of the episode in that Hippies Anonymous storyline? Seriously?

3.) Although Don is supposed to be an anti-hero, even as an anti-hero, he should not annoy you. You might hate him, but you should not hate watching him. Unfortunately, Draper has crossed that line, with his brooding and still the same paramours (the doctor's wife, Diana the waitress) etc. For example, Walter White was an utterly despicable human being, but I enjoyed watching him from the beginning to the end. Same goes for Tony Soprano.

All in all, I will definitely return to the series in the future (not too soon, though), if only for Roger (man, he was awesome! Slattery is definitely one charismatic dude). It has been a good experience, honestly. Now, apart from finishing American Horror Story, the TV series path divides -

Boardwalk Empire
Downton Abbey
The X-Files
(finally seriously, from beginning to the end)
Battlestar Galactica

However, since all of these are "my series", so to speak, it depends on what do I convince my wife to watch with me next, so we'll see. Opinions? What should we watch next?
Good summation of Man Men, I watched it pretty much as it aired except for the first few episodes .. it is a good "slow burn" series with some time to think what each episode means. I really enjoyed it one of my favorite shows.

I will say Boardwalk Empire is similar, I binged it, but it seems like it would have been better watching 1 every few days.

a mere excuse to get a young actress in her underwear for ratings
What's wrong with that?:p

Anyone who wants to check out TXF but does not want to invest time into watching all the episodes, you can purchase smaller DVD sets that just have the Mythology episodes. I have watched the series more than once and saw the 1st film in the theater. Love the X Files. I also love season 8 with John Doggett. Too bad our conversation in Chicago at the meet up never unearthed this mutually loved TV show.

I can't believe we never discussed it! I'm a massive fan.

As far as skipping episodes goes, I highly recommend against it. The mythology episodes are great up to a certain point, but there are great Monster Of The Week episodes in every season (even the bad ones). On this last rewatch I found myself enjoying the majority of the MOTW episodes far more than any of the mythology episodes (especially after Season 5).

I finally saw 10 Cloverfield Lane. I've been waiting for it since the trailer dropped and I'm not disappointed. It's the best film I saw this year (which includes some late 2015 releases) and I can totally see it making to the top 3 of 2016. Intriguing story, great directing and acting... It managed to keep me at the edge of my seat for the whole time. I know the ending is probably highly divisive, but I buy it. Other scenarios for the conclusion that I could think of, would be unsatisfactory. I highly recommend this film, especially if you like the kind of Lost-ish mistery vibe - I really felt like I was watching a great Lost episode (and I mean the thrill, not similarities in story, although there are some minor ones).
What I loved about the movie is that
even though John Goodman's character was crazy, he was still correct about what he was saying about life on the surface!

Agree! There was this very insightful article written by my favourite cinephile (unfortunately in Czech - he actualy teaches the film theory on college in Brno - I deeply and utterly love his articles, but these are often very long and very "heavy" - I don't know whether English has word like "overschooled/overtaught", but that's a common criticism against him from other people, such as my wife, for example) who is a huge TXF fan and he actually differentiates between the serial/Mytharc episodes (the "adult fear" part, full of conspiracy, dark government, dark America etc.) and the series/MOTW episodes (the "horror/adventure" part, bringing new TV spins on older themes like classic horror (Campbell's/Carpenters Who Goes There/The Thing) in his assessment.

Even the movies fit - the first one being more or less Mytharc, the second one being more or less MOTW (allegedly, I haven't seen it so far). Each part is good on its own, but by having both, the series actually transcends mere 90's TV series and becomes a very interesting study in that darker, Twilight Zone part of the television.

BTW, @MrKnickerbocker , I edited that previous post with two more episodes :)

I would be interested in reading that article! Google might butcher it a little in translating, but still probably worth a look.

Maybe we should open an X-Files thread...?

Unfortunately, it's in PDF, a scan from a movie magazine, as seen here

However, if you're really interested, I might translate it. Ah, what the heck, I'll probably do it. :)

You have my full support. Or should I do so? I've never opened a thread meself :D

Just saw the Blu Ray extended cut (3 hours long!) of The DaVinci Code. Really like Sir Ian's performance. Love the book and movie.
Saw the documentaries. Ron Howard and Tom Hanks rightly appreciate the great and rare opportunity they had to actually film in the Louvre. They filmed late at night and had the opportunity to see the amazing art without fighting crowds. Lucky.

Ghost and the Darkness - true story starring Val Kilmer as hunter trying to kill man-eating lions in Africa around 1900. Michael Douglas stars also (although as a fictional character created for the film).
Saw the actual (stuffed) lions on display in The Field Museum in Chicago when I traveled there to see Maiden few months ago!

Going to see Anthropoid this weekend. Reviews seem mixed, but I'll go see just about any WWII movie

ANTHROPOID is based on the extraordinary true story of Operation Anthropoid, the World War II mission to assassinate SS General Reinhard Heydrich. The Reich's third in command after Hitler and Himmler, Heydrich was the main architect behind the Final Solution and the leader of occupying Nazi forces in Czechoslovakia whose reign of terror prompted Allied soldiers (Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan) to hatch a top-secret mission that would change the face of Europe forever.

Never heard of it but sounds interesting. Look forward to your review.

Binge watching Alias. Saw it 10 years ago, but watching it again. Love this show. Enjoy Victor Garber's performance, the visuals, betrayals, surprises, gadgets, but especially Jennifer!

Recently started watching Breaking Bad. I'm currently at S02E11.

I hated seeing Walt just watch how Jane choked in her own vomit. She was a bad influence to Jesse, for sure, but you don't just let someone die like that. Disturbing.

Oh Saap, you've got a long, dark road ahead of you. Such a great show. It's not one I'd rush to watch again, but it's a masterpiece for sure.

Once you finish, I highly recommend Better Call Saul. It's equally as good, sometimes better, but a much different show.

Heard good things about Stranger Things and that it's supposed to be mimicking the style of 80s Spielberg, Stephen King etc. Will be watching first episode tonight!
