its stolen Uriah Heep riff and its endless lack of variation, the Red and the Black is the most lauded song from the last 10 years, it was plugged by Maiden for two years in a row, maybe even three (God help us)
3 points here.
1. Totally stolen from Uriah Heep but they (Heep) don't give a fuck and most here (me included) never knew it until we were told about it. Does it make a difference if the stolen riff was not well known? Maybe. Maybe it implies some sort of slyness on Steve's part but, really, who cares? Not me. Should I care? Maybe. Do I? Naw. If it was Rime that was stolen then maybe I would take an interest but its a mid-range song on a mid-range album so I cant find it in me to care. At this stage, Steve has still written more great riffs than he has robbed so I forgive him. For the moment.
2. The Red And The Black. I am sure you have a better grasp on the actual stats and facts than me but this song gets a lot of stick, from what I have read. OK, it has ardent fans but many, many detractors, if memory serves. Personally, I voted for it but it galled me to do so. Its a bit pish.
3. I hope to fuck they do not play it ever again. Bruce can't sing it and even if he could, it's not worth it. I doubt they will ever do it again. Thanks be to fuck.

Tailgunner vs If Eternity Should Fail - Big fan of the former but theres just something about the latter that I adore, might even make the hallowed Top 10. The instrumental of Tailgunner is class but the slide (especially live) into the chorus of Eternity is just sublime. And its a chorus for the ages.

Holy Smoke vs Speed of Light - Always liked Holy Smoke. Both are kind of throw away Maiden songs, not a patch on the big hitters, like the kind of thing they wrote because they felt they had to. Holy Smoke is much more fun.

No Prayer For The Dying vs The Great Unknown - great match up. Both evocative, for me but theres just something about The Great Unknown that I just love, the tuning, the rhythm, the lyrics and the delivery (On the weak alone), it just about shades it.

Public Enema Number One vs The Red And The Black - I hate this vote. I love a good Public Enema. Not a fan of the bridge, really but some good solos and a nice heavy verse but, really, the last 4 mins of The Red And The Black are phenomenal. As an overall song, it annoys me. Verses are too long (especially with the guitar-followin-vocal carry on) and there's too many of them and the instrumental section has a few minutes of throw away stuff, but....but.....when its good, its fuckin great. Would the last 4 mins be so good without the previous 3 mins of nonsense? I don't know. Maybe the payoff only pays off when taken in context. Either way, the final push of this song is up there with the most joyous shit they have ever done and so therefore it beats a very decent song.

Fates Warning vs When The River Runs Deep - tight as a gnats chaff, as they say in Russia. Not a fan of the bridgy bit nor the verses in Fates Warning and I really like River Runs Deep but the main drive of Fates Warning and the solos sway this one. River Runs Deep is a rolicking ride of a song and I like the fact that the chorus slows down but, vocally, the verses are a tad bland. That said, I really like Bruces delivery on the chorus. Probably the fact that I've know Fates Warning for 28 years longer has a part to play here.

The Assassin vs The Book of Souls - Come on. No contest.

Run Silent, Run Deep vs Death or Glory - Another very tight one. Ive always liked Run Silent, Run Deep, love the wee riff between vocal lines during the verse, the whole thing is quite heavy and aggressive and I like the change of pace of the solo in the middle. Death or Glory is also good. Very good. Just not good enough.

Hooks In You vs Shadow of the Valley - Hooks in You is a turd. That is all*

Bring You Daughter To The Slaughter vs Tears of a Clown - Like them both but there's only one that I will be listening to in 10 years time. Well, that's not strictly true but you know what I mean.

Kill Me Ce Soir vs The Man of Sorrows - obviously not a fair match up but Man of Sorrows is a top song. Not standard Maiden but good nonetheless. The verses aren't great, to me, much like Dave's other recent efforts but the intro and the rest are top. There's a certain atmosphere to this one and I think that everywhere Age of Innocence fails, this tune succeeds. The last bit is class, a real example of how Maiden could be a proggy jam band but its cut short, listen to the background bass, it could go on for days.

Mother Russia vs Empire of the Clouds - I don't adore either but the latter has the riff from The Legacy so game over. If Mother Russia was 18mins long, it might win but it's not so there ye go.

Tailgunner vs. If Eternity Should Fail
Holy Smoke vs. Speed of Light
No Prayer for the Dying vs. The Great Unknown
Public Enema Number One vs. The Red and the Black
Fates Warning vs. When the River Runs Deep
The Assassin vs. Book of Souls
Run Silent, Run Deep
vs. Death or Glory
Hooks in You vs. Shadows of the Valley
Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter vs. Tears of a Clown
Kill Me Ce Soir vs. The Man of Sorrows
Mother Russia
vs. Empire of the Clouds

Most of them were quite easy choices but a few surprisingly difficult ones later on.

Basically everything from The Book of Souls, except for "Holy Smoke" and "Run Silent Run Deep", which I think exceed "Speed of Light" and "Death or Glory" respectively. I did take a while to think about the second pair, but eventually went with "Smoke" in virtue of it being much more fun than its counterpart. All of the rest was pretty much dead on.

I stand corrected @mckindog and @Niall Kielt. Public Enemy is doing a lot better than I estimated.

To me, Red and Black is a song that seems to really divide fans, a top 50 or bottom 50.
Enema is the opposite, not that many love or despise it, but most like it.

That’s why this matchup was interesting to me.

I actually dislike a lot of TRATB (mostly because of the unison vocal and guitar line), but there are some riffs in there that are more memorable than the entire Public Enema song (though I do like it).

Public Enema is a great song and easily the best on the album. It has some great melodies and is one of the few times Bruce’s raspy style works. It’s a rare early 90s moment where everything seems to come together. The matchup is a bit unfortunate since Red and the Black is a completely different style, but it’s really not one of their strongest 8 minute+ songs. It’s hard to even classify it as an “epic.” Public Enema takes this one quite easily.

Fates Warning vs When the River Runs Deep is a much more appropriate matchup and I’d say these songs are pretty close quality-wise. That being said, WTRRD stands as one of the lesser songs on its album when Fates Warning is among the best songs on its album. Fates Warning has better riffs, one of the best Maiden bridges, better guitar solos, and even a better vocal performance.

My most controversial vote is without a doubt Hooks In You. Never got the intense dislike for this song. It’s not great and the lyrics are a bit goofy but it’s a fun rock song. Shadows In the Valley is easily the worst song on TBOS and probably my least favorite Maiden song in the past 10 years. It is so meandering and there are few moments that stand out to me. It is like a compilation of filler.

TBOS wins every other round and it’s not even close. Except Run Silent Run Deep vs Death or Glory. I almost voted against Death or Glory and I’m still not sure which I actually prefer.

Just here to mention that "The Red and the Black" has always been in my Top 10 Maiden songs, ever since it was released.

If Eternity Should Fail
Speed of Light
No Prayer for the Dying
The Red and the Black
Fates Warning
The Book of Souls
Death or Glory
Shadows of the Valley
Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter
The Man of Sorrows
Mother Russia

The title track NPftD is one of the most underrated Maiden tracks, I really love it. TGU is great, but NPftD is one my top favourite 90s tracks. Couldn't decide between TRatB and Public Enema, because to me they're both so-so. Went with TRatB because of my gut feeling. And I'm pretty confident with the Mother Russia vote.

Yes, but lots of other people find it to be average or "disappointing". Well, I guess it's just a matter of perspective. :p
