These last two pages were the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. Seriously. The meme thread was created with the intention of avoiding this, and you guys just closed it. It was, in my opinion, an utterly ridiculous and completely unnecessary move. What could go wrong about it? The FUNNY / WEIRD / RANDOM pictures thread would go back to "normal", and the other thread would be used for what you call "meme spam" so that you wouldn't have to look at it if you didn't want to. The most reasonable solution was there, in your faces, and your (completely unfounded, btw) violent reaction to it is just piteous.

I recall throwing together a slightly drunken explanation of the Weimar Germany-themed mum-can-I-have-some-money meme I posted a while back (I think it was for Perun's benefit), and came away with the impression that it had been an entirely fruitless exercise.

Well, that was mainly fruitless because you explained the history, which, as a German with a history degree, I'm well aware of, but not the meme behind it. What threw me off there was that I thought there was some sort of inside joke in the panel structure or something, and it turned out there was nothing else to it. When I got to see other examples of this meme, I realised it actually is as childish and unfunny as it seemed at first (which is my opinion now, not my judgement on you).

I disagree. There is a conflict here, which has been cooking for a while, and we're finally having a constructive conversation about it. I don't know who closed the meme thread (it's entire lifespan and the whole escalation here stretched through my sleep last night), but it's not necessarily the only solution. Yes, on the surface it's just about stupid pictures, but I think there is a deeper misunderstanding at work here, which may be a generation conflict, if you will. The way I see it, at least I'm getting a few people's points of view here, instead of just some silly meme posts.

I’m 22. I’m young enough to understand these memes and I have younger siblings who laugh at a lot of the same stuff. Sometimes I even get a good chuckle out of the memes posted here.

I decided to do college in a non traditional way and as a result I only just started University last year, so a lot of my classmates are straight out of high school. This has been an interesting experience for a number of reasons, but the relevant thing to this discussion is that it surprised me how big a role memes play in the way they interact. They reference memes in their conversations and they are constantly looking at them. It’s obvious that they use memes as a means to relate to each other. The problem with that is it prevents them from creating a meaningful connection with anyone outside of that meme bubble (a better word than culture imo). These people aren’t fun to be around and they come off as really immature even for their age. The same thing is happening here and not just in the meme thread. I joined this forum when I was 13. Trust me when I tell you that in just a few years (probably even less for some of you) you’re going to find a lot of what you posted here really embarrassing and regret that it’s pretty much there forever.

When I was in high school, not everyone had smart phones yet. Memes were really popular then too but our access to them was limited to when we were at a computer. Also, and probably a result to that limited access, memes were mostly shared among the “nerdier” more computer savvy kids and the humor was more curated to that type. Now everybody of a certain age group looks at them and they have to appeal to a wider audience. It also seems like there is a more Dadaist approach to memes. There are probably a lot of sociological reasons for that and it might be an interesting discussion for a different day.

?! Here's my point of view:

I) I didn't see this "cooking", as you say, simply because you guys never made it clear that it was this big of a problem. Never once I got the impression that it was an actual issue, and not just generational nitpicking. II) I'm sorry, but I don't see anything the tiniest bit constructive across these last few pages.

This isn't a constructive conversation. It's an aggressive discussion that is quickly escalating into a fight. An I'm not talking about the anti-meme squad only, I'm talking about everybody involved.

I really don’t see anyone being aggressive other than you. People are being challenged sure but it is in a civil way.

There was a massive misunderstanding going on for a long time. I and probably others here (look at Mosh's post) are quite oblivious to the role memes play in the conversations of younger people. For me, this whole discussion here has turned up that it is a generational issue in the first place. I didn't realise that this meme posting is a form of communication. I just saw a bunch of pictures that made no sense to me. I can walk away from this now knowing that I'm not part of the target audience of the meme dumps and ignore them without having the feeling I've been spoken to.
We're quite far from fighting now, actually. There have been some excellent posts by Phantom (although I disagree with much of what he says), Wogmidget and Mosh, and if it takes a few feathers being ruffled to have this sort of thing turn up, so be it.

That was last night. Then you guys started spamming up this thread for a couple of pages instead.

Since this morning the discussion here has been quite civil.

Yes, I understand that, and that's what I was saying it was never made quite clear before yesterday. Again, it just seemed like generational nitpicking.

Yes, and now it's clear. The nature of misunderstandings is that neither side is aware of it. It came up this way. That's a good outcome, isn't it?
