It pains me to include David Beckham among my 10 picks as Notable Athletes from the U.K. but gotta do it, there's no chance the class is gonna recognize any of Steve Redgrave, Chris Hoy, Bradley Wiggins, Bobby Moore or even Mo Farah.

Who are your 10 notable athletes? David Beckham, Andy Murray, Steven Gerrard, Lewis Hamilton, John Terry, Phil "The Power" Taylor, Gareth Bale, Joey Barton, Paul Gascoigne and Ched Evans?

I only know the first two.
I've heard the name Gascoigne, but I don't know what he does.

Does that make me an ignorant North American, or Brit athletes not particularly relevant?

An English football player. Dutch people into football remember him well from a thriller we played on Wembley. It was against England. If we would lose we would not qualify for the 1994 World Cup. The most exciting match I have ever seen. We got 2-0 behind!! In the first half.

And then we managed to equalize with goals in the second half. The last goal was a penalty. At that point my legs were shaking with adrenaline.

Back to Gascoigne. Jan Wouters gave him a terrible elbow on the jaw, still in the first half. I think the jaw was broken. Gascoigne bled, didn't return in the second half.

Highlights and elbow can be seen here. No live commentary. You hear Rinus Michels, legendary coach, commenting, looking back with a journalist. Elbow sequence starts at 3:30.
Gascoigne himself was a gifted player but also one of the most aggressive, crazy players in football history. We gave him a cookie of own dough, is a Dutch expression that might fit here, although it was a terrible foul of course.

You probably don't watch football much (or darts).

Speaking of darts, I happened to see some yesterday on a TV and it seemed like the guys were always trying to hit the same spot, that red line on the 20. Pretty dull if you ask me. Or is there something else to the game?

I have vodka to drink with Bulgarians. I might die tonight, meaning 2016 is going to take the biggest of them all yet...

Joey Votto, Penny Oleksiak, Christine Sinclair, Andre Degrasse, Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby, Andrew Wiggens, Milos Raonic, Carey Price - currently among Canada's best athletes.

Heard of any of them?

Roll it back a bit and add recently retiredSteve Nash, Simon Whitfield, Goerges St. Pierre, Hayley Wickenheiser, or declining Mike Weir, Eugenie Bouchard - how about those names?
