I'd say ELP and King Crimson are the hardest of the major classic prog bands to get into.

They probably generally are. Personally, I loved both almost instantly (especially ELP), because they really clicked with me. I had much bigger problem with Yes outside Fragile and CTTE or Marillion outside Jester or Childhood. Gentle Giant are also quite tough to get into, IMHO, but honestly - the hardest classic prog band to get into must be VDGG.

Gentle Giant are pretty hard to get into, but I wouldn't put them at the same level as Yes/Genesis/ELP/KC in terms of popularity/influence.

I haven't listened to much VDGG but I found what I've heard so far to be pretty accessible.

That was my first one! I think it's great. It really appealed to me right away. I also have Still Life which is good but I haven't spent much time with it. In general I want to listen to VDGG more but I haven't really gotten to them yet.

Maybe, just maybe I like the more mainstream prog. I like the Childhood/Jesters albums by Marrilion but that was their most popular period for good reason.

Marillion's best quality is their sense of melody. It is no surprise that they were popular for some time.

Don't know if there's any of the big prog bands that are hard to get into...hard to take in all at once if you're not used to the music I guess, yes, but if you have an open mind/ear for music I don't think it should be so bad to listen to any of them. Gentle Giant are probably the wackiest of the bands mentioned so far since they're very playful musically and like to mix a lot of genres....

Italian prog bands for me have been hard to fully get into...the music is fantastic but the language still irks me on occasions and that's definitely the hardest hurdle.

I never got into ELP, even during my peak prog rock years. VdGG were pretty funny at times, songs like "Killer" always put a smile on my face.

I absolutely love King Crimson but I never got into ELP either. Way too self indulgent for me, also I don't really like keyboards as a lead instrument.

Oh yeah. I checked some out after Mikael Akerfeldt talked about their influence during Pale Communion era, it's very overwhelming. It was put off and haven't gone back since.

I was just coming home from a friend's place and something interesting happened. I was walking along a long road when I caught a glimpse of someone dressed in black running away. It seemed a tad peculiar but I thought it might've been a cat or something. Immediately after, I came to a crossroads just a turn away from my house. I look left - silent and cozy like my neighbourhood usually is. I look right - 7 guys spread out on the road like 30 metres away from me!? I had to go in their direction, hesitated for a moment, but still went. They were stationary for a bit but then started to move. It was then that I realised they were just some punks around my age kicking people's fences and being loud. The next turn we took was the same as well. My house was up next and I quickly imagined a scenario where they vandalise my fence as well. I would catch up with them in a matter of seconds and would have to initiate something that ends with me getting beaten up. None of them looked scary individually (judging from their backs) but there were freaking seven of them. Also, my stomach had started to hurt a few minutes prior to this. Anyway, they continued to walk/run and nothing happened. Had I chosen an alternative route to my house earlier, I would've walked straight into them from the other side. Something of an adrenaline rush but damn interesting.

Least you could do would be to pretend you're getting a kick out of what they're doing to avoid trouble. That's probably what I would've done if not getting noticed was a failed attempt.
