At the next concert, Bruce takes the mic:

"Aye, we pulled up yesterday next to the President of France and the Chancellor of Germany, and asked them if they needed a tug down the runway. It was like sitting next to a couple of VW bugs, you know what I mean? Anyway, this next song has got a main riff bigger than Angela Merkel's aircraft."

I haven't listened to black metal in a long time but it was my favourite metal genre some 5-7 years ago while I was just getting into metal. I thought heavy metal was lame back then :p. Cannibal Corpse was my favourite death metal band at the time. My taste has changed a lot since then but some of that stuff is still good to listen to every now and then.

The most obvious difference between the two is perhaps the lack of growling in black metal, which is replaced by a "screeching" of sorts. Also differences in melody: black metal is often accompanied by more symphonic sounds and calmer passages.

Hm. We currently have active threads on "Death Metal" and "Black Metal." I'm not sure I know the difference. I'm not sure I care.
Two different genres. If I were to describe the difference in a simple way, I'd say death metal is based on rhythm and riffs (it's also more technical), whereas black metal is more about chord progressions, melodies and atmosphere (heavy use of tremolo picking and blast beats).

Nice examples chosen there. Death and Amon Amarth may be the only two death metal bands I still enjoy.
