I don't consider Opeth all that technical. Depends on your meaning of the word, but they are definitely more atmosphere than technical playing.
 
Opeth's atmosphere comes from the prog influence. (Except for the first three albums, maybe, where black metal is indeed an influence)

I don't consider them technical either. They're proficient musicians, but technical music is something else.
 
I consider Opeth a progressive rock band with a death metal exterior, which is why it makes sense that they eventually abandoned the death metal. They are prog at their core.
 
As far as other weird things go: Train just released an album covering Led Zeppelin II in full (for some reason...?).


Honestly, I've always found Robert Plant's Zep vocals to be rather annoying and I've always thought the guy from Train had a really good voice, even though his band writes some terrible, terrible songs. So...I want to like this, but it just sounds like he's doing a Plant impression instead of singing in his own voice. So, meh.
