It says 17 for me, so yeah, it's about the time zone. There isn't. All significant events are at the age of 18 here, so one year to go.
 
Same in Canada, 18 is the milestone.
But I remember 17 as being a great year - on top of the high school world and feeling excited about stepping outside it soon.
Of course 17 is also when I saw Maiden for the first time.
 
Happy birthday Flash. So, is this your last year before college university? Or do you have another year left? Ah, 17. What a year.


To mckindog's point: I used to think it totally sucked that the REALLY important birthday in the U.S. is the 21st instead of the 18th. Now that I have kids I thought I would feel different. But I don't. I know they're still going to drink in college, if not beforehand, now they just have to hide it, and since it's still forbidden fruit, they are more likely to binge drink and get in trouble. Stupid fuckin' rule.

In Norway it goes like this: 15 to go to jail. 16 to drive light motorbikes and have sex. 18 to drive a car, and to drink anything not classified as spirits. 20 to drink spirits, and to drive heavy motorbikes, buses and trucks.

And 67 to retire.
 
There's an age limit for when one above that age can be punished for having sex with someone below it. A guy aged 25 can be punished for having sex with a girl aged 15, it's ok if she's 16. But if they are say 16 and 15 instead, there is no problem.

Oh, and in the US that same age limit is 18.
 
It's 18 here, too. It may be a result of law, but I honestly don't see how society slams a man who's interested in a 17 year old while not giving a damn about the one who's interested in an 18 year old. I fail to see the difference.
 
It's a matter of setting a limit for when the younger part is old enough to set limits for the older part, to avoid that adults take advantage of unsure youngsters. Whether that limit should be set at 16, 17 or 18 is not a question with a simple answer. A 19-year old may be very immature and a 15-year old may be more mature than some 18-year-olds. But the limit has to be set somewhere.

As for the social stigma: I can't speak for Turkey, but in Norway a 40 year old man would be seen as a dirty old pig if he's interested in a 16-year old, even though he may legally have sex with her. The only thing that would change if she was 15 rather than 16 is the legal aspect, and again - the limit has to be set somewhere.

UK age limits are 16 for marriage or sex, (gay sex age of consent used to be 21), driving is 17, drinking is 18 and voting is 18.
