Well, my remark started out as a dry (and funny meant) comment, contrasting the more mysterious content of Saap's remark when he said "There's
something about it". :--)
But at the same time you have heard me before with this opinion.
I don't see how Wasted Years (or any song for that matter) being played live often has anything to do with anything.

I believe that indeed can influence appreciation. It varies per person, but I am sure it plays a part in the total sum.
So? I don't see the Trooper on this list.
Perhaps some voters have not seen that song enough to appreciate its strength.
Or Number of the Beast. Or Run to the Hills. Or The Evil That Men Do.
These are on albums with popular epic songs. Most of them have also been on the setlist in fairly recent tours.
Wasted Years is a great song! Very melodic and catchy, and not too complex. ;-)

Somewhere in Time single-handedly. It was written by Adrian Smith, he sings on it, and it's the only one that was played often, let alone played in the last 10 years. Also, it has a popular video clip with countless Eddies, a hilarious playback version on
12 Wasted Years. Both studio and live versions are featured on various video releases.
Basically: The deafest hermits in Pakistan have not only experienced but also know Wasted Years.
Infinite Dreams, Sign of the Cross and Paschendale were played longer ago but all are featured on DVDs, released in the time of this line-up.
Again: this doesn't have to be decisive, but I am sure that a measure of exposure can help one's appreciation.
