How is Empire repetitive? All sections are different and it doesn't even have a chorus.

While the lyrics are not repetitive, the melody is at a minimum monotonous, but I was finding parallels in the bloat and the vocals singing along with the guitar (though not leads in the case of this song). Not a big fan, but to each his own. During the 18 minutes y'all are doing your history homework with Empire, I will be gladly rocking out and having a grand old time with El Dorado, Mother of Mercy, and When the River Runs Deep.

I like 3s
Shadow (eh song), Alchemist (kinda generic for the most part), Wild Wind (one of their weaker epics IMO). All decent enough tunes, but a notch below the rest

I can understand people voting for Empire because there was always a love/hate fan response to that song. I'm more surprised the number of votes for SOL. I thought I might be alone on that one. So many people are always saying they want short rockers, but that's what happens when Maiden do one - little more than bit of fluff with a jaunty video.

However, you can leave TFF alone. :(

The Red and the Black is not going to be one remembered warmly. Isle of Avalon is a little shocking to me, but it's not exactly accessible as a track. Some people don't care to be challenged by music, I guess.

I voted for Avalon and I do care to be challenged by music, from time to time. With Maiden in particular, I love when they do something different, whether I actually like the song or not I appreciate their freedom of expression. When the album came out I was delighted that they had some atypical shit on there, notably the intro, Avalon and Starblind, Man Who Would Be King in parts, too. But after my initial buzz for the album faded I found that I didn't like most of the atypical bits. Avalon in particular, its just not to my taste. The instrumental is good but most bits with vocals irritate me. Nothing to do with not getting it, I simply don't like it. Cos it sucks.

if people think Death or Glory and the Alchemist are rote, why does Coming Home escape that critique?
If Eternity Should Fail is one big cliche.
The Talisman starts well, but is exhausting.

I voted for none of the three. I like Death or Glory and I also like The Alchemist. I also like Coming Home. But this is kinda why I roll my eyes whenever people complain that there aren't enough short songs. They give you them. They give you different ones, and people still complain.

I agree with The Talisman. I've never understood the love for it at all. It's good, of course, but is it a great track? Eh, no.

I generally prefer the more progressive tunes, but I can also say that my enthusiasm for TFF faded in recent years. There’s something about Avalon that just doesn’t do it for me, despite generally loving it when it was released.

Short rockers are hit or miss anymore. I actually love The Alchemist and The Pilgrim (short rockers that get a bad rap) as well as obvious ones like Wicker, Fallen Angel, and Rainmaker.

If anything I’d say the individual songwriters are just focusing on the wrong songs half the time: Adrian hasn’t written a great rocker since BNW, whereas Murray hasn’t ever written a good epic, proggy tune.

It doesn’t.

It’s got a great vibe and a catchy melodic line, which buys it some points.

I’m not keen on the delivery of the chorus (“Westward the tide...”), but I think the rest of it is great.

Shadows of the Valley
TFF
El Dorado
Coming Home
The Alchemist

Hot take: Satellite 15 ≥ TFF

Also, what's up with The Great Unknown getting 11 votes? It's a great contender for the best shorter song on the album. It lives up to its name, very mysterious, sounds like exploring a dark jungle.

People probably expect they will get another Wasted Years. I also like Death or Glory and The Alchemist, but I must confess I associate them a lot more with a proggy sound than the 80's rockers, just because of their albums...

I sometimes feel this way about The Book of Souls.
The Talisman is thrashing and relentless, and it seriously succeeds at it. Compare it to Paschendale, it gives me the same energy.
