Iced Earth

For me, the reason why I wouldn't buy any future Iced Earth releases is simple - I don't want to give him more money. CFH, I pretty much agree with you. The only reason government helps the people is when the members of government are refreshed with a clear warning that if they don't perform X service they will be expelled. But what we are seeing here is beyond a healthy critique of government. It's rabid paranoia and the inability to think critically.

Maybe I'm naive but I think this is just a phase for Schaffer. Plenty of people  feel what seems like an  awakening when they get politically involved and begin researching for the first time and take skepticism so far that it returns full  circle to gullibility. These sort of "awakenings" don't stand up to long periods of logical scrutiny and the more people think and research the less hyperbolic and paranoid their ideas become. I think Schaffer may eventually  turn this project in a more positive, less paranoid direction, once the initial shock of "awakening" wears off.

That'd be wonderful. Imagine Schaffer waking up in 2013 and thinking... "oh God, and I even set up a website for that..."

Cornfedhick summed up my thoughts with his post, but a few things...

I watched all four parts twice and I still couldn't decipher what was the "awakening" they kept mentioning... kinda reminds me of a pointless scientology video I once sat through. Perhaps I wasn't paying close enough attention (probably due to the entire program having the stench of an infomercial) but the "truth" --whatever it is-- should've been revealed at some point in the program --preferably within the first ten minutes. Also, Alex Jones had a bothersome habit of cutting off Schaffer every time he was speaking.

Any time I hear people talk about awakenings and the "truth" I am prompted to raise a brow. Whenever someone speaks of being unplugged from the matrix and finally seeing things crystal clear, I'm impulsively inclined to treat their statements as less credible.

Nothing changes under the sun (took that quote from Schaffer himself)... that includes the nature of the human creature. There was mention of the forefathers/1776 in a somewhat "exalting them" kind of light. People were no more noble/virtuous centuries ago than they are now. They were driven by the same greed/selfishness/money then as they are now.

Schaffer isn't exactly a "celebrity," but I still found this slightly amusing (skip to 3:50)

Thanks for that link, Grotesk.

Would be weird but we all have seen how Schaffer can change 180 degrees about things. Once he slagged off Barlow and heralded Owens, later he slagged off Owens and heralded Barlow. That was so unbelievable. Sometimes I think the man is a fraud himself.

No, that was just him drifting with the tide.

Look at how he puts his t-shirt directly in the camera at the end and it will become a bit more obvious. ;)

This is my favorite band... (Iron Maiden comes in a close second so don't hate me )

Iced Earth is actually the first band I really ever got into. I love the band and the overall sound. It's unfortunate how Schaffer always comes off as being a dictator. The band actually seems to have a solid line-up at the moment, which is good. "Alive in Athens" is one f the greatest live albums ever created in my opinion.

Burnt Offerings is a grower, so if you rate it as "pretty good" right now, chances are you'll think of it as "amazingly excellent" in a few months. I personally think of it as one of the greatest metal albums ever.

I must confess that I found it excellent from the beginning. I was especially surprised by the non Alive in Athens tracks, strong stuff.

I'm gonna listen to Horror Show in the following days. Should I consider trying Something Wicked or another album first?

BTW: I noticed that there are maybe 4 solos in the entire album, what's up with that? And they aren't that good.

Iced Earth solos mostly suck.

Regarding your choices, i like both albums, but Horror Show is IMHO best Iced Earth work. Steve DiGiorgio does a wonderful job.

Don't forget Night of the Stormrider if you don't want to miss their best rhythm guitar work. This album is probably one of the (if not THE) best collection of guitar riffs ever. Very aggressive material and a lot of tempo changes, a true feast for people who enjoy that aspect in Iron Maiden.

Another singer (however, his style fits this record as much as Blaze's fits The X-Factor), but the individual songs are so strong that it shouldn't be overlooked. Actually, a lot of Iced Earth's strongest tracks are on this record.

I find it much better and a lot more adventurous than their recent stuff. Overall, this is a true classic in the metal genre. Not in the least because this is really an album with "drive". So energetic and well produced, a rare gem in the history of metal.
