Thanks a lot for this info! I have wanted to see Wacken 2007 for a long time... HAVE A PRAISE!  :yey:

Just to let you guys know, Jon Schaffer recently came out with a new solo project called Sons of Liberty. The album can be downloaded  for free from his website. Having heard the album a few times, I'm mildly impressed. It's definitely proof of Schaffer's growing ego but the guitar-work's his best in years and the vocals are surprisingly good considering I had no idea Schaffer could sing.

He proved it on Gettysburg, and he sang Stormrider by himself when I saw them in '07.

I'm gonna have to take a look at that solo project...

EDIT: The website freaks me out, though.

I'm not into this patriotic / conspiracy propaganda. Campaign for liberty my ass.  :puke:

This link is even on that crap site as well.

First I thought, let's hope these rants stay away from Iced Earth. But now I wonder if I should care at all now that I (finally) realize that its leader has totally opposed views to mine. I listen to music to get a good feeling, rather than fooling around with the angry rants of some frustrated man.

Yeah, I think Schaffer may have gone slightly insane, but at least this new political obsession of his has replaced his recent obsession with palm-muting every riff he plays.

That seems like a silly reason not to listen to music you'd otherwise like.  For example, I think the rantings of Rage Against the Machine are moronic and hypocritical -- and their support of groups like the Shining Path in Peru is indefensible -- but I still like their music.  In fact, the revolutionary anger probably makes the music better.  I'll check out Shaffer's new music.  My concern is not that I will disagree with his politics, but that the politics will render the songs cheesy and stupid.  If so, I'll be doubly mad at his spending time on this project rather than putting out the Live DVD this year, as he promised on Iced Earth's website.

EDIT:  From what I've seen of his website, though it is not exactly clear what the site's mission is (I take it he's in favor of "Liberty"), I generally favor liberty over government control, too, and while his citations to the writings of Beck and Paul are unfortunate, his citations to Jefferson, Paine, Hayek, Ferguson, etc. are not.  Niall Ferguson, a Harvard history professor, is not exactly a right-winger.

I saw Part I.  Not yet Parts II-IV.  A couple reactions:

1.  Alex Jones is a douchebag.  Never heard him before, never heard OF him before, but this was a pretty easy conclusion to draw.  A professional bullshitter.

2.  Part I seems like an infomercial for a Tony Robbins video, in which people talk about vague "awakenings" and "the truth," but no one really articulates what it is -- at least not in the first 10 minutes anyway.  Maybe they get to the point later, but if you can't tell me what you're talking about in the first 10 minutes, you're not a particularly effective communicator.

3.  As best as I can tell, Jon Shaffer's "awakening" was that he was shocked -- SHOCKED -- to learn that the government might not actually be here to help.  Welcome to the Real World.  (Perhaps he should have been reading my posts in the USA Politics thread.) ;)  It is a well-established maxim that government entities are motivated solely to protect and expand their own power.  Political economists have been writing about this for years.  The popular notion that Obama's administration would somehow be different is laughably naive yet also a bit sad.  I guess if this is the message, it's a valuable one.  Yet holding up "1776" as somehow having religious significance is also misguided.  The U.S. Founding Fathers were flawed, selfish and power-hungry, much like today's politicians, albeit far more courageous and visionary.  There was tremendous infighting and partisanship.  Hell, Aaron Burr SHOT Alexander Hamilton.  (Note, however, that George Washington was revered as a near-godlike figure by just about all of his contemporaries.  Excellent biography about him by Joseph Ellis, entitled "His Excellency," which is what the otherwise anti-monarchy patriots actually wanted to call him, but he insisted on "Mr. President."  Truly a great man.  But that's another thread.)  In any event, you don't have to be an Atlas Shrugged-thumping libertarian to believe that a healthy skepticism of the government is a good mindset.  Is that really an earth-shattering "awakening," though?

4.  Did I mention that Alex Jones is a douchebag?

Unfortunate? Sure. His links to these guys deliberately. Today, again, on the Iced Earth site:

Furthermore, I strongly recommend you to see Ron Paul's speech "Is It Just A Bad Dream ?" on YouTube.

Again, thanks for your support in this, now let's get to work on restoring liberty!

Jon

Jon "conspiracy" Schaffer, welcome to the world of crazy ideas!

I saw pt. 1 and if I heard it well he said the war in Afghanistan and Iraq is a fraud.
What was shocking to me was that he came across as a mentally ill person who needs treatment.

I am not angry with him anymore, I feel sorry for him.

All these weird ideas started after he read some books and saw that "trustworthy" junkfilm about Obama (all this he calls "researching"), and some films made by the douchebag patriot presentator who gets an orgasm when he speaks out the word liberty. Schaffer thinks that Obama is doing exactly the same things as Bush.  :nuts2:

Amazing that such a man can be influenced so easy. He's probably not the only one who falls for that kind of shit, but man.....  How small can judgement of human nature be?

I'll try to see the rest later on, and see if it's getting less conspiracy theoretic.

edit: Part 2 -> Alright, this is getting more vague (I have to admit that the music sounds pretty nice) but also more paranoia. He thinks that the war on terror is there for one reason only: the bankers. Jon Schaffer is a man who is afraid.

Part 3: The Awaken. They speak of themselves a bit like some Christians do. I begin to feel this is a kind of religious movement. A sect with dogma's and indoctrination. Schaffer: "I feel liberated, I can deal with the truth."

He links to Loose Change on his website. There is no way you can be more of a conspiracy theorist.

A shame he didn't use this music for Iced Earth. Some stuff is really strong. Great solos and vocals as well.

part 4: He pleads to be open minded about this project, he mentions that the left-right thing is a freud.
Things are not what they seem. Learn to be an American. Study the constitution, look at the founders.

The presentor talks about "scientific dictatorship". Well this says it all really.

What's sad is that Schaffer isn't completely wrong about everything... but he's talking like a confused 85-year old. Next, he's going to sit on his porch with a shotgun and scream "don't come near ol' Jonny you banker bastards!"

And seriously: One of the books he's linked to has a testimonial by Stan. Who's Stan?

You know what I find the most hypocritical of all this? Jon Schaffer is going to make money with this new thing. He's exactly going to do the things that banks do: selling products.

I know you hate Blabbermouth but I find it interesting to see all these different opinions. Some of these metalfans follow him blindly, others are more critical, and some rave about the musical content.

Some various posts:

My four Iced Earth albums just ended up in the bin. Sorry for supporting a right wing tool. 20 years of travelling did not make him wiser. Too bad.

...

(speaking to a supporter)
I've followed these crackpots for years. What's lacking in your reasoning is critical thinking. Conspiracy theorists are too feeble minded to understand the complexities of our world. It's easy to place blame on mysterious forces controlling your destiny when you think you have no control. Fact is you're clueless and helpless.

...

I'm still not completely sold on the whole conspiracy theory crap. Certainly the vast majority of politicians are corrupted by personal interest of money and power, but the idea that there is some global order controlling them all is a little ridiculous. However, Schaffer has definitely got me thinking which is what he wanted.

...

Alex Jones is a d-bag that thinks the US government bombed the World Trade Centers. 'Nuff said. That guy is an idiot and any one that stand bu him should be painted with the same brush. He is as bad as the guy that thinks every world leader is actually a shape shifting lizard alien.
Everything he says is a conspiracy has been disproved. He and his ilk are just too stupid too deal with reality so they make up their own.

...

Regardess of the lyrical content, this is musically, the most inspired stuff I've heard Jon make in almost ten years.

...

What is discussed here certainly is true and easy to prove.
People who think "this is all bullshit" are simply ignorant, in other words they haven't seen the countless documents proving it to be nothing but the truth.
I'm definitely not right-wing but I fully support Jon Schaffer on this and if you still think in terms of "he's right wing so he must be wrong" then you're an idiot and you're being manipulated. Use your head, research your stuff, THEN decide what's true and what isn't. It's time to wake up and smell the coffee people. Research topics such as "Bilderberg", "Trilateral Commission", "Federal Reserve", "Seigneurage" and see for yourself: You are a bunch of SLAVES.
Wake the fuck up and close your bank accounts.

...

Instead of going off on this so called "bullshit" why don't you use your brain and look into things a little deeper. Do some research. READ. LOOK. LISTEN. Things are not what they seem! Consider the "what if" scenario and educate yourself. Passing this off as crap is exactly what THEY want you to do. This problem is going to be worldwide, not just a US issue. OPEN YOUR EYES!! And stay the fuck away from that bullshit swine flu vaccine, it is made to do you harm!

...

Since when is Blabbermouth pimping out Alex Jones anyway? The guy's not a credible source for ANYTHING. If he told me the earth was spherical, I'd want to double-check that shit with a globe first. Anybody who shells out money for his reprehensible "documentaries" is too stupid to handle currency in the first place.

I wish more artists and musicians had some basic critical thinking skills. More to the point, I wish fans would stop taking sociopolitical advice from them. Although there are exceptions, creative types aren't necessarily the most logical thinkers.

He is offering it as a free download. What is funny is that he is raving about moneymakers and has almost every link on his website go to Amazon and Youtube. I am certain those are non-profit links, but I still think he hasn't thought this through.
