GREATEST METAL ALBUM CUP - Winner: Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son!

I think LC put the Metal Archives rule to set some kind of boundaries although he was generous enough to put the albums that weren't listed there. For example, my Rammstein and Tool nominations weren't listed there and they still ended up in the game. I don't want to start "what is metal" debate again, but let's be honest: those two deserve more to be labelled with it than some other nominations here.

As for my Rush comment: I only skimmed their later 80s and 90s period so I'm not that familiar with it (except the singles) and Power Windows is one of them. I realize it can be somebody's favourite albums, but generally looking, you won't find it in Top 5 Rush lists, just as you won't find Systematic Chaos in Top 5 DT lists.

But, if I got it right, past few leagues have been a part of tournament with 1 user nomination and I have a feeling that every round (or every second round) there was a Rush or DT album. Moreso, I have a feeling "their best" is still yet to come in the tournament and some of "their not so best" moved on which means soon we'll have Rush VS Rush or DT VS DT matches at the same time as Maiden VS Priest or Sabbath VS Metallica which will only make even later matches more landslide-ish.

This being said, I realize this post may come across as rantish and that wasn't my intention at all. I'm writting all this because I really enjoy GMAC, discussing somebody's nomination and discovering something new. I'm just concerned we don't end up with "more of the same" and people start loosing interest in new pairings. Also, I must say @LooseCannon is doing an awesome job with the whole thing (has anybody patted him on the back or are we waiting for this whole thing to finish?).

As for the current pairings:

I can imagine myself going through Accept discography and I can't imagine myself going through King Diamond's discography.

I really wanted to vote against NPFTD but this Quen...Queensrch... Queensrye... that band's song didn't made me want to listen to the whole The Warning album.

TFF is one of my favourite albums up there with BNW, both of them having only one mediocre song (BNW's The Fallen Angel and TFF's The Man Who Would Be King). Also, I'm going to say something little controversial: there are no great trash debut album. IMO, they all suffer from bad production, hit-and-miss tracklist and overall feel of "trying too hard". Albums that came after that are what perfected trash genre and enabled to look at those debut albums more fondly than they deserve.

Never understood the love for Perfect Strangers, it's on OK album. I think Blackmore/Gillian bias made it more popular than it should be.

TL;DR - I like GMAC, also look forward to more versatile rounds; great job LC; voted for Accept, Maiden x2 and DT.

I don't get it. I know that happens when someone has just voted meanwhile but I've refreshed the page several times and the numbers still don't fit:

One different person failed to vote in each place, so there are 4 people who only voted in 3 matchups.

I think he’s referring to the list of names for a given vote showing one more person than the listed total number of votes for that option.

Exactly, thank you @Jer. Right now is still shows 7 votes for Them with 8 members having voted for it.

That's weird. This particular thing seems to only be occurring with me for the top matchup, the others show OK on my end.

Since there seems to be a push now for getting down to business - albums that actually belong in this conversation - I’m curious where people draw the line at what defines a worthy album? In your world how many “great“ albums are there? 10? 50? 200?

I’ve never done the math, but The Final Frontier is a good talking point for me; I love that album, played the shit out of it when it was new and I still go back to it regularly. There is nothing “landmark” or ”iconic” about it, but in terms of what I want to listen to, it ranks exceedingly high on my list: a great mix of song styles, terrific rhythms and melodies, interesting lyrics, good performances. That doesn’t change the fact that it is Iron Maiden being Iron Maiden, it didn’t shake the world in any way.

I despise Slayer so it doesn’t work for me, but I understand the argument that it’s debut had an impact in a way that a “routine” Maiden album did not.

Every band in this round is iconic, but, my feelings for Slayer notwithstanding, Restless and Wild is the only album I’d consider to be iconic for that band. There will come a point where I will choose a more iconic album (say, Appetite for Destruction) over a personal preference (like Final Frontier) but I’m not sure I’m there yet.

Pretty much this.

Honestly, I'm quite pleased with the way this process worked, and I'd take the top 3 leagues as a fairly definitive list of "Great" Metal albums. The quality level just ramps up so aggressively, and we seeing that now.

Sometimes I vote for what had a greater impact, but usually that's if it's a choice between two albums that I like. I won't vote for an album that had a greater impact if I consider that impact to be a shite impact:lol:, i.e. I wouldn't vote for a "classic" nu-metal album.

Also, sometimes I just vote for the album I like more or am more familiar with, e.g. today's vote for No Prayer or the vote for Cowboys from Hell recently against a big Scorpions album, but an album that I don't own so am unfamiliar with.

It's showing 8 votes and 10 names for Them now  should be a draw but Restless and Wild is winning now.

It's not what this is about. We're individuals with individual preferences. The total of these form the result.

What is the point of agreeing with what was the most iconic or which was the most influentual. WOW GREAT JOB that someone AGREES with some record sale, or other SUCCESS. There is no point.
Is this a game of showing how much one is into metal music history?

Then where is your individual opinion, where are we anyway, if one votes over another album above their own preference.

King Diamond over Accept but it's not important who wins.
Maiden
Maiden
Six Degrees is one of Dream Theater's best.

This round is mostly pure anti-band bias for me...

Accept because I think King Diamond is absolutely ludicrous. His musical style is cool, but his vocals belong in the same discussion of comedy and parody as Spinal Tap (except Tap sounds better).

Iron Maiden because Queensryche does nothing for me and (once again) I am completely annoyed by their vocalist.

Iron Maiden because I dislike Slayer and their lack of lead guitar skills.

Dream Theater because The Glass Prison is probably my favorite DT song ever and the rest of the album is no slouch (though some of the "pieces" in the title track are quite lame). Perfect Strangers has come far enough.

There isnt any right or wrong to this conversation for me.
But favourite doesn’t equal greatest in my world, it’s just an element of it. Objectivity is a smaller element. (For example, I can talk objectively about Slayer but any positives won’t overcome my visceral reaction. Other have expressed similar feelings about Rush)

My favourite hockey team has been a doormat for a long time. Objectively they aren’t great. Music is certainly more subjective than sports, but there are still elements of it that can be discussed objectively.

I’d vote for a lot of Queensryche over all of Maiden’s weak albums if they had a different singer. I can’t stand the tone of Tate’s voice.

The Warning has stronger songs than NPFTD but I simply cannot enjoy them.

Sin After Sin isn't even in the top 10 Priest albums.
Odd, if it wasn't for Sad Wings it would be my favorite 70s Priest album. Sad Wings is just in a league of its own.

Also, I genuinely think No Prayer is a great album. Maybe not deserving of the greatest metal album of all time moniker, but a great maiden offering none the less. Plus Fates Warning is super underrated.

Not gonna be too too upset by Show no mercy being eliminated by TFF. Atleast it's not Virtual XI this time lol. There's no songs on Show No Mercy that have the depth of songs like Starblind, but Show No Mercy makes up for that it full on satanic speed metal bliss. Look I've heard a lot of bands try to do the NWOBHM meets early speed metal meets tongue in cheek satanism, but no album does it meaner than Show No Mercy.

Stricken by the force of Satan's might!!
