GREATEST METAL ALBUM CUP - Winner: Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son!

Power Windows doesn’t belong here, I voted for it anyway but wasn’t thinking much about it. Sometimes when I see Rush I just vote for it by default, it’s just the most rational choice.

Edit: PW is a fantastic album though. I’m finding that I increasingly prefer the 80s Rush to everything else, despite my tendencies for prog snobbery.

I don't mind Power Windows being here as it's one of my favorite Rush albums, but that Metal Archives rule was pretty ridiculous to begin with.

In my top 3, not sure where. That plus Painkiller and Screaming for Vengeance are my priest trinity.

Venom isn't lethal enough to stop Be'Lakor, who will advance to League 5. Venom is back in League 2 with a far more recognized album.
Megadave kicks out a Rush album. As we know, Rush will have another album out in Match 32.
Alter Bridge comes ahead in a back and forth battle to eliminate Bolt Thrower. It'll be Voivod next.
Judas Priest sinks Atlantean Kodex's chances in the GMAC. They'll have a matchup against Van Halen in League 5.

I fully intend to vote against both Iron Maiden albums, as it is now time to move the chaff out. I can't bring myself to vote against a vastly inferior Deep Purple album, so I trust to the progsnobs (JOKING) to take care of business for me.

Yup. I also prefer The Final Frontier to Show No Mercy but voted for Slayer's debut since it's a classic and after all it's an ok album (the 4 next would be way better but hey!). But I had to vote for No Prayer since I really think pre Rage For Order 'Ryche is quite meh. And while I'm not a Dream Theater fan curiously enough I really love Six Degrees and happens to be my favorite record by the band.

The worst song on Final Frontier is better than anything Slayer ever produced.
Most overrated metal band. One note and not a particularly interesting one.

Im glad those who are voting for an album they like less are making it clear the choice is purely political and they haven’t actually spent more time or get more enjoyment from listening to Show No Mercy.

Restless and Wild is good, not a huge Accept fan but I can dig that album. King Diamond is kind of a joke.

I like No Prayer, I’ve defended it on here before, but I’m not about to pretend that it isn’t bottom half of Maiden’s discography. The Warning is a classic on its own anyway. The best representation of early Queensryche and a trailblazer of that genre akin to the debut Maiden album.

Here’s my thing with Maiden: they have a fantastic batting average. Better than most bands here, which is partially why they’re my favorite. They have about 8 or 9 albums that belong in this competition. But there can be only one, and as the competition gets tougher that number of competitive Maiden albums also shrinks. Final Frontier is great, but it pales in comparison to a lot of the big league albums by other bands. I actually mixed up Show No Mercy with the superior Hell Awaits, but early Slayer is still a force to be reckoned with and I’m not going to be mad if it beats out Maiden.

On the other hand, by nature of this being a Maiden forum, there are a lot of folks who nominate pretty weak albums. There are also enough folks to vote for those weak albums over better competition. I trust that those people genuinely enjoy those albums and prefer them, but it does create an advantage that only Maiden has. A lot of weak Dream Theater albums got nominated, but were rightly thrashed because DT’s fanbase isn’t as large as Maiden’s on here (despite what the whining suggests). So I don’t necessarily think a “political” vote is a bad thing because I would like to see some variety in the final rounds. Besides, it’s not like they’re going up against Papa Roach.

I would be curious to see some discussion on Perfect Strangers. It has come a long way, but it’s not a very good album. I get that it’s their big comeback, and the title track is awesome, but it’s pretty mediocre hard rock that lacks the excitement and energy of classic Purple.

Six Degrees is my favorite Dream Theater album. It’s immersive, every song is great, and everyone is in top form. Glass Prison is a great entry here because it really solidified DT’s metal cred. They originally formed as a sort of Yes meets Metallica, and they certainly have had many heavy moments, but The Glass Prison took the heaviness to another level and really captures that Yes/Metallica blend. It’s prog, but it’s also a relentless 13 minutes of one classic riff after another. Strung together much like a Metallica song, but with the tightness and ability of a Yes song. It rocks hard.

Accept - Video won't appear for me, I don't have this album but I do have the compilation album Restless which features 60% of the tracks. Another album I don't listen to too much, I put on Balls to the Wall 99% of the time when I want to hear Accept, but Fast as a Shark, Flash Rockin' Man and the title track spring to mind as classics

King Diamond - opinion given before

Accept with the win, but it's much of a muchness

Iron Maiden - This was the current album when I became a Maiden fan so I have a soft spot for it. It benefits with regard to the rest of the 90's albums in that it's quite consistent, i.e. the other albums tend to have some tracks of a higher standard and a lot of a lower standard whereas most of No Prayer is in the middle of the road bracket. Side A is pretty decent with maybe only the lyrics of Fates Warning being a bit dodgy, the Assassin is quite interesting musically and the chorus could have actually been quite catchy if the lyrics were not so appalling. Run Silent Run Deep is a genuine "hidden gem", potentially the best track on the album, Hooks in You is quite fun as is BYDTTS but I can see why they don't appeal to the more po-faced metal fan. Mother Russia is a bag of shite though, might possibly have been ok as an instrumental but the vocal melody is an atrocity.

Queensryche - opinion given before

Iron Maiden
with the win

Slayer - I thought this album wasn't going to be in the game so thank god for those list entries! My favourite Slayer album, although I nominated Reign in Blood instead. The Priest/Maiden worship is off the charts, especially on Metal Storm/Face the Slayer and Chrionics, The Final Command has 4 hilarious screams, each one more over the top than the one that was before it  The Antichrist, Die By the Sword and Black Magic are all live classics obviously, Evil Has No Boundaries and the title track really should have been featured more in their sets down through the years, I did see them play the title track in the mid 2000's when Lombardo was in the band and it stole the show.

Iron Maiden - opinion given before

I like The Final Frontier more, but I'm voting for Slayer as it's a tight call and I reckon most will vote Maiden anyway

Dream Theatre - not another album from these

Deep Purple - opinion given before

Deep Purple with the win
