Amaranthe... *sigh*... What can I say? Just drop the growling dude, cut some gain on the guitar's distortion and skip the double bass parts then you're in a good position to win the next Eurovision festival. And no, this is not a compliment... far from it. This thing going against a Maiden album (even a middle of the rank one) is almost blasphemous itself. Iron Maiden 100 out of 100 times.
Baby Metal... BABY FUCKIN' METAL! Maaaaan. Really???? What is this crap? I know that Japan, while having bred some great bands in different genres (like Loudness and Envy) is also home of some really weird and abysmal shit when it comes to music. But this Baby Metal crap may as well be at the very bottom bracket when it comes to the latter. And it's not mainly because they're vocalized by 3 kids that render a chipmunk like vocal effect. The music itself is the true materialization of pop metal's most horrible mug I can remember of. So much it makes want to listen to Amaranthe again and feel how edgy and brutal they are in comparison. This is 100% trash and even though I'm far from enjoying Counterparts big time I would pick Rush's album 10000000 out of 10000000 times over that shit.
Well... this round keeps punishing my eardrums, this time with Powerwolf. Now this is in the vein of bands I love soooo much like Rhapsody and to add to my delight this thing's very name is a treat. Power from Power Metal... well it checks (unfortunately sounding like the majority of D&D Power Metal) plus Wolf because their lyrics are about Werewolfs and some of the dudes even wear corpse paint looking like the comic book character Lobo. Wow... far fetched and mind blowing! Well music wise this is as poor and corny as the genre can offer but after listening to Amaranthe and especially Baby Metal it sounds like a masterpiece! Unfortunately for Powerwolf the same doesn't happen when compared with Skyforger, a record that although being predictable as hell and even boring has a lot more to offer. So yeah... Amorphis.
I must confess that, since I bought Wake/Lift back in 2008 (when I first listened to the band) this is without shadow of doubt the album that I listened to the most ever since (and it's not even close to the second place since I've no idea of what record is #2 in that particular rank). I mean it wasn't 12 straight years of intensive listening but only recently (let's say about 4, 5 years ago) have I managed to stop listening to this thing in massive doses (even though I can easily say I listen to it at least a dozen of times a year since then). The first years it was it was simply addictive: this album (and Cynic's Traced In Air to a lesser degree) was so absurdly overplayed that the mere fact I can still listen to it beginning to end and still be in awe is a testament to its greatness. As for Wake/Lift itself... unlike many Post-Metal bands Rosetta don't put their main foundations on Neurosis' soil. They wander throughout a strangely melodic and hypnotic mix of Radiohead and Mogway's soundscapes, psychedelic era Pink Floyd meets God Is An Astronaut guitars and as far as the support for all these strange combinations we have the sound wall of something that would result of a collaboration between The Young Gods, once again God Is An Astronaut and some Space Rock band with Cult Of Luna's most experimental vein. This record sounds simply huge, monumental. The way these guys manage to trade humongous walls of sound for delicate tunes in a matter of seconds along with their absolute masterful momento building wit, the ever present melodic resounding guitars that banish every kind of saturation, the way Armine's screams sound as a part of that very same wall of sound (the reason why they're so back in the mix is far from being accidental) is simply unique, making this album one of my all time favorites hands down. Wake/Lift sounds huge, uplifting and is addictive as hell if you buy into it. And although the band always released stunning albums (and recruited an additional guitar/ clean voice later that made them their sound even more diversified) they never managed to produce something that impacted me as much as their sophomore. And yeah... while Hemispheres is a great record, a classic and is surely wining this I could care less. All of that is meaningless when it's facing one of my definitive top 10 albums of all time making my vote on Rosetta as easy of a decision as it can get.
