I’m mostly here to vote for Gojira and against Yngwie. I’ll have to listen to the others, heard good things about the Motörhead and blaze albums in the past.

Reactions: Jer
E'Lephant Sausage - Not really into Thorns.

Best album with Blaze Bayley ever vs. Virgin Steele who are really outstaying their welcome here.

Best Blind Guardian album over some random guitar wankery.

And a classic Faith No More album vs. just another Motörhead album.

The nicest thing I could say about Gojira is that they’re the thinking man’s Pantera. Shit vocals with interesting riffage, but it all blends together and almost every song on the album sounds about the same in the end (“The Wild Healer” and “Born In Winter” change things up a bit.) No thanks. While Thorns also has shit vocals, they’re not quite as bad, and the music is a lot more interesting. Sorry, @phantomoftheicarus , but I’m going with @Magnus on this one. Winner: Thorns

This second match-up is actually pretty tough. I think the backing band from The Man Who Would Not Die (and Promise And Terror) is the best band Blaze ever had, and the band itself kills it throughout the album — but Blaze himself is the weak point here, often singing uncontrolled and off-key with poor phrasing and questionable lyrics. Meanwhile the Virgin Steele album is pretty solid and consistent, with good riffs and solos, and generally better vocals. I could go either way on this, but since The Man Who Would Not Die has Blaze’s best song on it (“While You Were Gone“, IMO) and the band is so good on it, I’ll throw @Poto a bone here. Winner: Blaze Bayley

I will obviously go with my own nominee in the next match-up for reasons previously discussed. Sorry, @Night Prowler . Winner: Yngwie Malmsteen

This Motörhead album doesn’t really do much for me — it’s mostly samey big dumb rock. The Faith No More album outclasses it in every respect. Sorry, @Dityn DJ James . Winner: Faith No More

Fortunately not I think.

The case for Orgasmatron by Motörhead:

I'm honestly quite shocked by the attention that this album garners (ie none). It's fast, ferocious, sleazy, dirty, weird, a tad progressive (in parts), and very, very straight to the point. If that sounds like typical Motörhead fare, you'd be partly correct. To get the full picture, we need to go back to the end of 1983 first. I thought about typing out the full story behind this album and a lot of my fleshed out feelings towards this album here, but I recorded a video on this album that sums up everything (and more) about my case for this being one of Motörhead's finest outings, enjoy:

PS: you can clown me for the amateur presentation, I am no Kubrick or David Lynch

Gojira and Thorns are both bands operating way beyond my comfort zone. If I had to pick one, Gojira is the least worst sounding to my ears. Those vocals are a huge turnoff.

The second battle is difficult. The album of Virgin Steele is great. Blaze Bayley has much better albums than TMWWND, still voted for him.

Malmsteen and Blind Guardian are right up my alley.
I prefer Blind Guardian over this Malmsteen album.
Sorry @Jer but I guess Yngwie is marching out this game.

The last battle is really no contest for me. Lemmy is great but Faith No More and this album in particular is awesome.

Gojira - No real interest in this sort of thing, it's not awful, singing ok melodic riff in the verse good, but really bored to death of one note rhythm guitar riffs. Nice unusual chord in the breakdown riff in the middle. Double bass part that kicks in is shite.

Thorns - Double bass is awful, guitar sound like a jar of bees, their track in the last round was way better

Gojira with the win

Blaze - Not a huge fan of this album, I think the following album "Promise and Terror" in the same style is much better and both a tier below the first two albums. The self pitying lyrics about what a survivor he is a major turn off although not as bad as on Blood and Belief. Still an ok listen

Virgin Steele - opinion given before

Blaze with the win

Yngwie J. Malmsteen - Vocal good but a bit too earnest, decent riff, solo great obviously especially the tone

Blind Guardian - Not as corny as the usual power metal but not great

Yngwie J. Malmsteen with the win

Motorhead - I don't have this album but obviously familiar with the title track, possibly their best track.

Faith No More - Never heard this track as it's not on the album, I thought it was going to be a cover of Aerosmith for a second  Pretty decent track actually. Opinion given on the album a few times

Faith No More with the win

Interesting votes for far. Thorns is holding their own against Gojira, which I did not at all expect.

Fun round, lots of good albums. Could have voted both contestants in many of the pairings.

Gojira and Thorns were rough going. Gojira was less rough, so voted for that. The gentleman in the Thorns song sounded at times like he was going to lose his lunch.

Ah, Blaze Bayley. Maybe I'll reveal my opinion on his music, if the album in question comes up (and I'm pretty sure it will). This album, based on the song I heard, made me vote for Blaze. I have to admit though that Blaze is one of the artists that brings back painful memories of past relationships the most, so I missed most of the Virgin Steele song because I got preoccupied by emotions.

Yngwie Malmsteen was not too bad at all. I would have liked to vote for it, but I really liked Blind Guardian the previous time I heard them on this Cup, and did this time too.

I also like Motörhead. This example song wasn't very melodic though (but maybe my crap computer speakers made it even worse). But I guess I like Faith No More even more. Funny thing happened when I started listening to the Faith No More song. Listened for a while and thought "this really sounds like Lemmy, I didn't know Faith No More played such rough style! I wonder if Lemmy featured on their album..." Then I noticed that I had left Youtube on another web browser open, and it had continued playing the Motörhead album, although I thought I turned that one off. Had I voted unknowingly between two Motörhead songs, god knows which one I would've voted for.

The Infant Sausage is difficult to fault, Gojira all the way. I could get used to Thorns with less scratchy production, but this is not a battle I can support them in. Blaze has a pretty respectable album here, while I'm tiring of Virgin Steele. No matter what magnitude of guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen is, I don't especially like listening to his music. Blind Guardian are far more fun. Not too fussed either way about the final two. Faith No More don't sound like they're wallowing in mud, so I'll go for them.
