Ghost (Tobias) have so obviously progressed as songwriters and performers with each subsequent album that I simply can't fathom the "old stuff is better" argument in this case.
I agree, but “Ritual” is actually a pretty great song that stands up well next to what the band would turn towards.

Ritual is a decent rock song with a chordal riff, a nice simple melody riff, and a simple verse riff that sounds like Symphony of Destruction with weak distortion. The chorus tries to do the same thing as Absolution, but lacks the punch due to production flaws and a more amateur composition. It's got a cool bridge riff and turnaround, but the "Our father" speaking voice thing is kinda weak. The lead is nice, but too short. The ending solo is better, but still sounds a little pedestrian.

Absolution is a cool metal song with a twisty, groovy main riff that is more metal than a lot of Ghost tunes. The syncopation between the riff and the drums is awesome, one of the band's catchiest instrumental moments. The quiet, creepy verses and pre-choruses with their light guitar/piano layers are contrasted in a big, anthemic chorus. The piano break with the synth line is incredibly unexpected, a perfectly placed atmospheric section that culminates in a Priest/Maiden-style lead guitar harmony. The off-timing breaks in the last chorus are epic.

I don't think it's crazy that at least one extra person here prefers the latter.
