Idk, I though the first three albums had a nice tongue-in-cheek, cheesy, pseudo-gothic air about them. IMO they've lost most of this with Prequelle

But Ghost have become surprisingly deeper. "Dance Macabre" has a very fun, poppy sound, but when taken in the context - Black Death - it suddenly becomes a well-rounded tune about being with the ones you love and enjoying life for as long as you can. I don't fucking care that it's not by the band; Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" is special because it's him taking an already existing song and re-purposing it to fit himself, and Ghost take lyrics written by outside writers to fit their record. I really don't see what the big deal is here.

Eh, I tend to to think about lyrics too much (outside of Maiden and Sabaton ofc).

My point is that, musically speaking, where songs like Secular Haze and Spirit could almost double as the soundtrack for a really shitty ye olde horror movie, Dance Macabre strikes me as just another generic radio rock song

To me, it could feel generic but it never does slip into that territory. It's easily my favorite Ghost song after "Rats" and "Square Hammer".

Ghost (Tobias) have so obviously progressed as songwriters and performers with each subsequent album that I simply can't fathom the "old stuff is better" argument in this case.

They haven't though. The stuff may be a bit more polished on later albums, and maybe some of the Satanism is less corny* but the riffs don't rock as much nor are the hooks more memorable on the following records than as they are on the debut. Ritual, Elizabeth and Stand by Him at the bare minimum are better than anything on the following albums. It's almost like seeing fans who got into Maiden during the Blaze era saying something like When Two Worlds Collide is better than Sanctuary.

*is that a good thing though? Satanism is better tongue in cheek as it's fucking ridiculous seeing grown ups earnestly prancing around as Satanists.

What does this have to do with anything? What if someone does like "When Two Worlds Collide" better than "Sanctuary"? Are they wrong? Is that absurd? No. It's just a different taste and opinion from yours.

It's not like that. They are more complex and catchier, both in general songwriting and riffs. It's like someone saying that Maiden's riffs on TNOB and Piece of Mind are better than Sanctuary or Running Free - and that person is correct.

What is that Square Hammer still doing here?

Being the best song, probably.

Songs like Dance Macabre remind me of Blue Oyster Cult or even Alice Cooper. Very poppy upbeat rock songs with dark/ gothic lyrics.

I like the double entendre with "bewitch you" and "be with you" a lot, I think it's very clever.
That's something I didn't like about Dance Macabre. The 'Wit Choo' play on words sounds unnecessarily trendy. Definitely sounds like a shot at the mainest of mainstream.

He's saying "bewitch you", not "be wit choo". I heard the latter for a long time until I looked up the official lyrics.
