European Politics

So much for liberal European democracy  :P

I wonder if certain Norwegian foods will be banned as well, due to their strong smell  :D The Danish won't be to blame for that, though, as they are well used to smelly cheese themselves ("Old Ole" and his father).

I will not have a bad word said about Marmite - the Danes will miss out on the best spread ever.

I just heard on the news that Ratko Mladic is arrested, and that DNA analysis is taking place. I hope it's true.

That would be the best news I have heard in decades! This "Butcher of the Balkan" is the biggest post-WWII war criminal.

President Boris Tadic is having a press conference at 13h. I'll post here when it happens.
HE'S ARRESTED, IT'S OFFICIAL!

In Europe, at best.

He's under way to the Netherlands already.  :ok:

Seems this was based on wrong info. It'll take a week at least.

Which means a lot.

But he's probably also the biggest if you add the Americas, Australia, Japan, and more areas I won't mention now. The much longer list goes on.

Why is it so important that he is the biggest? Let his crimes speak for themselves and not compare them to the suffering of other people.

I honestly don't intend to downplay other crimes (you know me better than that), but this arrest really means a lot, at least to me. Emotion surely plays a role here. The images of this genocide, of his ravings, and the controversial role my country played, had lots of impact.

I am very glad that he finally is caught.

There are no pictures of him after the arrest but there's a video footage (although he is hidden behind the guards): his hair is gray and he walks really slow. He had multiple strokes in the past, so his arm is numb. They said that he looks really old and skinny and has no beard or mustache.

I feel really proud today :)

I got a horrible chill when I saw all the images of the cleansing on TV again.
Mladic talking about how they could finally get the Turks back for 1804. How he talked to the Dutch commander (which was very mean and embarrassing), How the men and boys were seperated, and the famous shot where the father has to call his sons -who were hiding in the mountains- telling them it's save, but they'll all get machine gunned in the end. Between 7000 and 8000 people....  Those images were horrible but somehow it was good they were made. They'll be used in the trial, I reckon.

He's old and ill. He's going to spend his final days in far better conditions inside ICTY detention, than he had since he went fugitive. He's going to die inside a prison cell that looks like Waldorf-Astoria compared to shitholes he's been hiding in. He hasn't been a free man for the last 10 years because his movement was restricted. Radovan Karadzic tried to live a second life via his alias of Dragan Dabic, alternative medicine doctor, living freely, visiting and being invited to Croatia on multiple occasions. Mladic didn't even care to have a second life. He's just been hiding, confident about the rightfulness of his past actions.

There's no point in holding a full scale trial. The huge procedure behind it. This man ordered howitzers to target "living flesh, only living flesh!" at siege of Sarajevo. Via radio. Unscrambled. He hasn't been hiding his actions or tried to depict them as something else. Whole world knows what he did, he made sure that we all get the big picture!

Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. But he himself presented all the proof you can imagine. I know it's not possible, but i'd like a special, extraordinary trial in this case, where ICTY would grant 6 months tops for his defense to come up with evidence that he isn't guilty of something ICTY is charging him for. After that fails, he gets dumped in a dark and moist solitary for the rest of his life.

I hope so. But... there were videos of Ramush Haradinaj and his soldiers executing Serbian people, but he was still released from prison

I agree with Zare, btw.
