Not surprised at all after the fiasco with Roadrunner and The Astonishing. This might be very good for them (although inside out seems like a bit of a step down).

Jordan Rudess says they will start writing a new album in May: http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/dream-theater-to-begin-writing-new-album-in-may/

My favourite quote from the article:

Rudess also talked about the DREAM THEATER songwriting process, particularly as it relates to "The Astonishing", the wildly ambitious double concept LP which has been criticized by some fans for being an overblown, self-indulgent exercise in excess.
I think I agree with that assessment of 'The Astonishing'. Even after two years I still haven't managed to get to grips with 'The Astonishing'. It's just too long. A single disc concept album I can get on board with but this album has no focal point, nothing memorable.

Apparently JP recently hinted that the next album will be musically inspired by the "Images, Words & Beyond" tour. 'Pull Me Under part 2' anyone?

I like that album a lot actually. Mike Portnoy wrote a blog post about how much it sounds like 'Images and Words' shortly after it came out. He came off really badly and has since avoided talking about Dream Theater's new music.

I just hope the next album is easier to digest than 'The Astonishing'.

IIRC, it was actually the guy from that Brazilian Dream Theater cover band on YouTube that wrote the blog post, and Portnoy shared it.

Yup. I heard similarities before reading the blog post, it was very obvious in a couple songs.

I actually think it was a brilliant idea and, if it was intentional, I wish the band would admit it. There are several reasons I don’t care for ADTOE but that’s definitely not one of them.

I've heard the comparison between ADTOE and I&W but never noticed similarities myself. Might be because I don't listen to either one much. :P

Parallels between On the Backs of Angels & Pull Me Under, Lost Not Forgotten & Under a Glass Moon and Breaking All Illusions & Learning to Live were pretty clear.
