DAWSON 1 YEAR ON

Are any of you fucks gonna tell me what the fuck an astroturfing campaign is? Jesus, I'm not even joking
It means that one or a few people work together to spread a particular opinion under different accounts across various parts of the internet, in order to create the impression of a widespread sentiment.

But Joe Lazarus is absolutely delighted with his career.
And we all know that everyone’s life is just as they make it out to be on social media. ;)

It’s a fake grassroots campaign where a small number of people try to make it look like a groundswell of people actually believe something. Fake grass, thus astroturf. Capice?

Yeah, about that.

You see the obvious contradiction? I didn't wanna add onto my diatribe of a post because it's overlong as is, but a great way to ensure a topic becomes functionally impossible to discuss is to play both sides. An incredibly obnoxious and vocal supporter of a cause, plus someone to slyly oppose it who shows up much later and accuses the former of being part of a grand conspiracy. That's how you poison the well. You play both sides but make one look particularly unsympathetic.
That's not a contradiction. There are multiple regulars who have explained why they are unhappy with Simon in previous threads. There might've been some pushback from people who disagree, but that's to be expected. This is a forum after all, discussing topics is the whole point. Those regulars are not the same people as, blatant example in this case, folks like Kurt who joined the forum solely to hate on Simon, posting 53 posts within 3 days, exclusively dedicated to this topic. A poster like that is very clearly not arguing or posting in good faith, that is what's poisoning the well.

Prior to this topic, there was plenty of discussion. Granted, some of it heated, but that's not exclusive to this topic. I've seen (and been part of in some cases :D ) the wildest topics turn into forum warzones.

You can still criticize Simon and make your case. Either in this thread or in one of the other active ones. You might ruffle some feathers but that's how these things usually are. I don't think any of those newer account have the power or potential to ruin forum discussions to such a degree.

Personally, I think the band sounds tight with Simon, but I have also read rumours that there are now doubts within the band.
The question is whether that is this astroturfing campaign.
Could it also be that Steve was originally satisfied with his decision, but has since heard what Rush has done and now finds his decision a bit simplistic, and is really wondering if there might have been a more suitable drummer?

I'd like to think that's only a rumour with nothing to it. But that said, we know that the band is following Rush and know what they did. It's also likely that at least Adrian and Bruce are seeing them in the US this year (Leana posted a story during the first few nights of the Rush tour that she can't wait to see them and Alex is always Adrian's guest during Toronto shows).

But if it's true, they should go all in and hire Simon Phillips.

I saw adrian saying like "very good" to Simon at sofia show. I cant remember the song but he turned to him and shake the head like "yes" .i doubt they are not ok wirh him its just the people.

Maiden going back on their choice of replacement would be an enormous shift to how they usually operate; i.e. sticking by whatever decision they've made come hell or high water. The biggest singular case of Steve arguably changing his mind on something major band-related would be deciding to have a meeting with Bruce in late '98.

I'm not saying it couldn't happen twice, but this would be still unprecedented in many ways. The chosen replacement being replaced with someone new and after they've already had a successful tour and made a bit of a deal about how well it's been going? I don't see it.

What are the sources for these rumours? I'm just rather curious.

I could definitely see "the band is unhappy with Simon" becoming just another "a tour with Judas Priest in the works" and "Dave wants to retire" if they'll be around with this line-up for a handful of years, heh.

So, basically, desinformation.

Um, didn't you actually find a sign pointing to the opposite - to dissatisfaction within the band?
That's something a teacher, for example, might do with a weak student who's trying hard and has managed to get something right once in a while.
It's not necessary for someone who's simply consistently very good, and everyone can see that and agrees.

Dont know, maybe but he did that. Bruce was the one who had a chat wtih steve because he was doing something wrong. It was the first dates of the tour

...

Steve says in a recent interview that NPFTD was influenced by Bruce's debut solo album. Curious to know. Really strong album!!!

''I think it’s a really strong album. At the time, we had gotten so big, with all the grandiose shows, that we were trying to go back to basics a little bit. If I'm totally honest, I think it was slightly influenced by Bruce's solo album, Tattooed Millionaire [also released in 1990, earlier], where he was trying to get a bit more basic. There are a couple of songs on there where he sings a bit rougher. I was thinking I could write something where he could sing with that gruff delivery as well. If someone says they don’t like something, that makes me embrace it even more. You’ve got to believe in what do, don’t you?''

Live sounding production would have made it worse (like Tailgunner video), Steve seems to want everything to be ''live''. Why would you want a live noise in the studio, I don't get it, it's so bad.

We can say a lot of things about Steve, but "he saw how a different band did something and got inspired to change his ways"... Well, personally I don't think this is a thought process that fits with what we know about Steve and his inquisitive mind.

So he’s influenced by other bands – in this case, Bruce’s solo projects.

The question is, why did Steve ignored Bruce's Accident of Birth, which he himself has said is a very strong album? Why does he choose to be influenced not by the best, but simply for the sake of change?

He has also said that Bruce's upcoming album is his best solo work ever. So will he use that as a reference point for the next Maiden album, or will he once again choose The Mandrake Project as the reference point?

Let me get this straight.

Are you saying that 34-year-old Steve in 1990, who listened to the solo album of his bandmate, on which the then new guitarist of Maiden and replacement for Adrian was playing, taking note of Bruce's vocal style and deciding to write for that in Maiden as well

is the same as

70-year-old Steve in 2026, 36 years later, paying attention to what a completely unrelated band is doing with their tour and their approach to replacing a band member with a younger and talented musician, and this leading to Steve second-guessing hiring someone he's been working with for over a decade at this point?

Did I get that right?

I’m not going to reply directly to this post by quoting it, because I find it completely unnecessarily confrontational and aggressive. Besides, I find it tiresome to have to write things like, “Nowhere did I say it’s ‘the same.’”
My opinion is this: It was an interesting interview with Steve from which I learned something new.
And even after that interview, we still have nothing on which to base the claim that we can rule out the idea some posted about that Steve might have heard what Rushdid and at least begun to have doubts.
He didn’t say anything in the interview like, “No, I’m the kind of guy who never checks out other bands.” He even shared an anecdote about the opposite.

I apologize for coming across as to confrontational and aggressive. In my mind there was an undercurrent of levity and bantering to that comment which apparently didn't translate in writing. My bad.

I think it's a pretty big leap to make though. Steve and Bruce have always had a somewhat intense relationship. Given the amount of control that Steve likes to have, it's not surprising that he would check out the solo album of the singer of his band, especially with Janick on there. And hearing new ways of how Bruce used his voice and thinking "hey, I should write for that in Maiden" makes sense as well, especially when we remember that BYDTTS was reused for Maiden as well.
Similarly we know that Steve kept checking out Bruce's solo albums in the 90s. There are interviews where Steve was bitter that Bruce left Maiden to flex his creative muscles only to end up making (phenomenal) heavy metal records again. That gives more "keeping tabs on an ex-girlfriend after a relationship turned ugly" vibes than "being informed about what's happening in the industry". At least to me.

And that's specifically about albums from someone important to Steve. I think it's safe to say, given what we know about Steve and what he has shared in interviews over the years, that he is not paying attention to what other (unrelated!) bands are doing. I don't think he's paying the least bit of attention to the Rush tour, and there's even less of a chance that he'd second-guess hiring Simon based on that.

Those are my opinions though. I think we can't draw this conclusion from that specific anecdote. If you think we can, then that's obviously valid and we'll just have to agree to disagree on this.
