Coronavirus

I'm definitely not recommending not wearing masks in countries where it's required, but I'd just like to say masks aren't obligatory everywhere. In Finland, there hasn't been an official recommendation to wear one at any point (except in some specific cases). Personally I'm against obligatory mask use here, if people want to wear them that's fine, but I don't want to myself. I believe there is no firm scientific evidence that masks would work here against Corona. And hardly anyone wears them here, I think I've seen maybe 2 people in my neighbourhood during this 4 months.

Okay, rant over. :) I've really wanted to say this for a long time, and tried not to post about it, but it's said now!

There is growing evidence that masks stop the spread of viruses by protecting the environment from the wearer. They don't provide much protection to the wearer, but they protect everyone else from possible infection.

I haven't worn one yet but it looks like they will soon become obligatory in shops in England. I think that's fair and I will comply with it, but I think it's pointless to wear one when just walking out and about with nobody nearby.

Im not sayin I/we are right but in Northern Ireland we have had 554 deaths (population 1.9mil) and there are not a lot of people wearin masks here. Ive been around the country in the last couple of weeks and I haven't noticed any regional difference in the shops or on the streets. Masks are very much not the norm.

x2.

Keep in mind that in hot, humid conditions you're probably gonna touch and move that mask a bit to let some air in. Which is worse than keeping your hands down, keeping your head down and breathing through the nose.

We haven't had random corona, every case is tracable to gatherings. I don't go to gatherings.

Edit : I was also in the hospital, and there I wore the mask. Some hospital personel didn't. But I was temperature-checked before coming in. Corona cases are in a different facility.

Let's see how my English copes with this. :) The Finnish Government had a research made on the results of scientific studies about masks some weeks ago (a bit like meta-analysis). The conclusion was that the masks don't seem to be effective, and no mask recommendation was made in Finland. However, a group of experts had made their own analysis, and concluded that masks are useful. Like Black Wizard said, many studies show that masks can help, but from what I know, many studies also show otherwise. That to me suggests that the benefits of the masks are not 100% certain. In Finland, it has also been mentioned that masks can be risky. So, as long as they're not absolutely obligatory here, I will not wear one. We had 12 tested Corona cases today in Finland, so I think we've done pretty well even without them. However, like I said, different rules, different situations in different countries.

Right now my country seems to be in such deep shit that the virus all but disappeared from the news.
Which is kinda positive.

No, it's still here and proliferating. Only nobody seems to care much right now.
So shit might not be the remedy but apparently influences perception.

Plenty of evidence that wearing a mask stops YOU from infecting others. It's literally no inconvenience to wear one, it should be a no brainer, no different than not drink driving
I take your point and I'm in no position to dispute and scientific or government advice. I wore a mask on my first couple of visits to the shop after lockdown but after that I didn't bother. I just followed the crowd. So few others wearin one and much chat about what kind of mask was adequate that I just stopped thinkin about it. Other than that, I feel I have been responsible.
Something I have been strong on is not touching thing I don't intend to buy, like not looking for the best date on a loaf of bread. The other day I saw an guy in a mask and with gloves on hoke through several packets of ham until he found the one he wanted. I'm not saying that has any relevance regarding me wearing a mask or not, just sayin that this guy was a clown.

RE Cried and your Tom Hanks feeling. You get the feeling that this thread is one of the best actors we will ever see? That this thread introduced me to Billy Idol and boxes of chocolates?
