BEST BAND EVER: Results!

Blackmore, Iommi.

Losing Satriani to Mustaine is crazy. Losing Akerfeldt to Tipton is also crazy based solely on one’s ingenuity, but at least I understand it more because of classic metal bias.
Tipton (co-) wrote many songs written deep in lots of hearts on this forum and on many albums he delivered the works: solos, riffs.

It works in his advantage that a lot of people know (and like!) Judas Priest. But it's hard to say that an example cannot beat his student. Or that Tipton's output is not good enough. In the end it is a matter of taste. And also affinity.

Gary is the moore talented guitar player but I am not a fan of the bluesy side of his work/style. Iommi's riffing (and songwriting) does way more to me, and I love his solos, especially on albums such as The Headless Cross, Tyr, The Eternal Idol. Listening to such albums for the first time but also to Vol. 4 and Heaven and Hell made impact! These experiences expanded and enriched my "music world" (enjoying music) a lot.

I certainly understand why he won, and so far I quite like his guitar playing! It's obvious that these classic metal guys who wrote a bunch of classic songs are going to win the votes on a classic metal forum. I get it.

That said, so far I've yet to hear a single thing from Tipton that even comes close to being as inventive, catchy, or technically-proficient as any of Akerfeldt's best songs or riffs.

Painkiller and Electric Eye come close, otherwise I mostly agree.

Tipton is a capable, but not elite shredder.
But when it comes to emotional melodic solos that complement the songs they are placed in, there were few in his class.

He knows how to mix his note-holding and fast runs so well and uses the pause better than practically anyone I can think of in the metal genre. Listen to poppier tracks like Another Thing Coming and Living after Midnight; those solos are simple but they add so much to those songs. You can practically sing them.

Really, in terms of letting a solo breathe, he’s up there with Clapton and scant few others in any genre.
