BEST BAND EVER: Results!

Agreed. After the exit of Randy and Buckethead, I don't care much for anything anymore.

Lifeson is the best guitarist here, Iommi is okay, Blackmore and Petrucci are overrated. Petrucci is technically good and Blackmore is important, but neither are actually interesting.

If Lifeson's compositions and playing sound anything like Rush, I wouldn't want him anywhere near my best band.

Blackmore vs Iommi
Lifeson vs Petrucci (Petrucci for sure knows his stuff but imho his playing had become quite predictable and repetitive over the years)

Petrucci sure has become less creative in recent years, some of his jamming is downright boring, but I think it's due to constant touring and tight schedules. In addition to 2 years of The Astonishing tours, he has his Guitar Universe thing now etc. He should just take the time to improve certain techniques again and hopefully get more creative in the process. Petrucci in his best eras has been so technically accomplished, a master of little nuances that make solos sound buttery smooth, but most footage I've seen of him from the last couple of years have shown a rather generic approach without much of that "magical touch".
Not necessarily linked to the rest of my post but a cool highlight from the guy is the solo on About to Crash, starting at 4:19.

I remember in the early 00’s, how I was such a fan of DT and of John Petrucci and to this day I still think that his solo on The Spirit Carries on is one of the most beautiful ever that combines melody along with speed and technique. Also not only with DT but his work with LTE was amazing as well but after a few years it seemed like he just kept repeating the same formula in his playing and his writing. If he could stray a little from his comfort zone, I’m sure he could come up with great things again !

Yes, The Spirit Carries On is one of the greats for the reasons you said. Another one is The Best of Times which has it all: a simple motif, singing melodies, fast shred and a beautiful composition divided into three sections.
