Rock Hard Ride Free's intro is absolutely astonishing and the solos are pretty good. I think verses are non-special but still, a very good song.

So we have 10 voters, right? And half of it went to Mob Rules. Good news for people who like to see Screaming for Vengeance and Moving Pictures go through instead of that one.
On the other hand: this round ain't over yet!

edit: we have 12 voters (at least) but 2 only 10 voted for the tie-break.

If you mean Last In Line, then yes, I prefer that one too.

Why? I like Last in Line a lot, but there isn't a song on that album that's as good as "Stand Up and Shout," "Holy Diver," "Don't Talk To Strangers," "Straight Through the Heart" or "Rainbow in the Dark." But, I guess, other than that...

Defenders does have a great A-side, but not only is Moving Pictures' A-side better, I think Moving Pictures' B-side is darn near as good as Defenders' A-side! Even if you don't count Moving Pictures as "metal," the "best A-side in the history of metal," as Foro put it, is Piece of Mind, followed closely by Paranoid ("Planet Caravan" notwithstanding).

Defenders' B-side is indeed weak, which is why it got my vote. Vengeance is a better album top-to-bottom. Neither is as good as Mob Rules, though. :devil2:

Holy Diver > Last in Line by a long way for me. Holy Diver is one of my favourite albums.

Monotone, Dull, whatever doesn't really matter... I enjoy it more, and that's what counts ;p and due to that fact alone, I would disagree on certainly the dull part.

Stylistically, Line is pretty much cut from the same template of Diver. Egypt is better than its counterpart (Shame on the Night) but I'd give Diver the edge on most of the other parallel tracks. It's a little fresher and got a little more crunch to it.
Dull and monotone are the last works I'd use. Stand up and Shout is electric, Straight through the heart powerful with great melodies.
Last in Line is a great album too, I just like Diver a bit more.

Egypt, We Rock and Last in Line are tracks that I would rate at least as high as or even higher than any track on Holy Diver.
Straight through the heart powerful with great melodies.
*shakes head* I honestly don't hear great melodies. Where are the melodies even? There's this tiny part ..
Shout to the wind
How can you hurt me this way
Oh once it begins
It looks like it's coming to stay
.. plus the solo. For the rest I find it a very unmelodic and repetitive song compared to 90% Dio ever did. Rhythmically it's also bleak copy of the title track. The main riff is the most self indulgent wankery Campbell ever came up with. None of such soulless trickery on The Last in Line.

Chorus is nothing special, but that bridge melody is great. Melodies on the couplets are powerful too.
Hanging from the cobwebs in your mind
It looks like a long, long way to fall...
But with melodies you either like them or you don't. Nothing to debate here. :)

Title track has been overplayed to the point where I don't like it much anymore, which isn't the case for any other Dio songs. I used to like Stand Up And Shout a lot but lately I don't care for it too much. Don't Talk To Strangers never did anything for me, unfortunately. Straight Through The Heart and Rainbow in the Dark are both awesome though, my two favorite songs.

And yea, despite all this, monotone and dull are the last words I'd use to describe those songs. Saying Straight Through The Heart is absent of melodies is crazy. You don't have to like them but whether or not it has melodies is not debatable

Piece Of Mind would also get my vote for this.

I nominate:

Virgin Steele - The Marriage of Heaven and Hell - pt II (1996)

Unfortunately Virgin Steele is one of the most overlooked bands in their own country. I rate them as one of the best metal bands from the North American continent. Their epic sound full of melodic and symphonic influences make them stand apart from the average metal band.

They have for me the heroism of Manowar, but there's more depth, more literature knowledge, more influences of mythology, Ancient Greece, more classical influences and it's a way more versatile band.

To everyone who's never heard them, this is a well kept gem from the United States. Intelligent songwriting, strong melodies, guitars and of course the excellent vocals by David DeFeis (also keyboard player, main songwriter and bandleader).
Their discography is a bit uneven but I can't recommend enough this most consistent 1996 album. Check out these songs (links included):

Virgin Steele - Crown of Glory
Virgin Steele - Victory Is Mine
Virgin Steele - From Chaos to Creation / Twilight of the Gods / Rising Unchained

Mob Rules
Screaming for Vengeance
Holy Diver
Last in Line
Among the Living
Dream Evil
Hall of the Mountain King
Hysteria
Keeper of the Seven Keys, Pt. 2
Kings of Metal
So Far, So Good...So What!
South of Heaven

Opeth — Orchid (The Flash)

+1

It'll be interesting to see if this group votes to promote Skunkworks even though it's a piss-poor (albeit brave) album, just because it's a Bruce project. If that's the case, we can officially declare objectivity thrown out the window.

I realize Flash has a strong preference for the proggier entries over the more metally entries, but my goodness, what did Ronnie James Dio ever do to you? At least Flash didn't vote for Rising -- if he had, I'd have assumed RJD once kicked Flash's dog!

Speaking of Dio, anyone favoring Last in Line over Holy Diver (or Dream Evil, for that matter) is nuts. "Egypt" is indeed a great song, but the rest of the album is, as I think 'Dog pointed out, a lesser copy of Holy Diver (a criticism similar to the one Foro once leveled at the brilliant Mob Rules, IIRC).

Err, I realize we already got a medal for that discussion but this game is not about objectivity. And it is played on a Maiden forum, but is that a good reason people should give a disadvantage to a few Bruce albums?

Why be bothered by the environment we're playing in? An album is an album, Maiden forum or no Maiden forum. Maybe I am naive but I hope people don't just save Bruce albums because they are Bruce albums, just like that.

Naturally many people like what Bruce has done and some of us appreciate more than just AOB and CW.

By the way, Skunkworks is not my favourite album of 1995/1996. A certain Iced Earth album beats it, and I have another favourite (which will probably be kicked out by the North Americans in one single round).

I prefer Sabbath with Dio and I absolutely love his work with Rainbow. But for some reason his solo work never truly clicked with me.
