Re 1978, I'm nominating Journey's Infinity and The Cars' self-titled debut. (Strong year.) Both are like early "greatest hits" compilations, there are so many well-known songs.

EDIT: Wait, we all forgot about Fleetwood Mac, Rumours. Certainly the biggest seller from that era, I don't expect it to get too far, but it really is an awesome pop album. Also, setting aside the "best vs. favorite" debate, it is hands-down the most "legendary" album of that period.

The cool thing about Rumours is that even people who've never heard the album will know half of the album because the songs are all so heavily covered. "Nah I don't know Fleetwood Mac....Oh, Fleetwood Mac made this?!"
