Ramble On —
And in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met girl so fair
But Gollum and the evil one, crept up and slipped away with her
Also Misty Mountain Hop, and I think there are one or two others

Someone wrote an essay on this, here.

Plus a more succinct and intelligent description here, from a Tolkien fan site.

"The very name seems to scream out Middle Earth. However upon closer examination, it seems that this song is most definately not about LOTR. Its rather about hippies, the 60's ect"

Same thing man,

Agree. Though I disagree with that writer in one respect: while the song is definitely about hippies, the reference to the Misty Mountains is certainly no accident. Robert Plant supposedly named his dog Strider, for crying out loud. Basically, if it sounds like a Tolkien reference, it probably is.

A song not mentioned in that article is No Quarter. A lot of the lines could certainly go well with Tolkien and it has that whole adventuresome feel to it. This is one of my favorite Zep tracks by the way :)

Close the doors, put out the light
You know they won't be home tonight
The snow falls hard and don't you know
The winds of Thor are blowing cold
They're wearing steel that's bright and true
They carry news that must get through

They choose the path where no-one goes
They hold no quarter,
They hold no quarter.
Oh...

Walking side by side with death
The devil mocks their every step
The snow drives back the foot that's slow
The dogs of doom are howling more
They carry news that must get through
To build a dream for me and you
They choose the path that no one goes
They hold no quarter,
They ask no quarter,
They hold no quarter,
They ask no quarter...they think about no quarter...With no quarter quarter.
Oh No...

Great tune. I like Houses of the Holy a lot.
I must say that as epic as Zep can get, much of it is just amplified folk and blues.
If you don't like those genres, a lot of it is not going to connect with you.

Again, never understood the dislike people on this forum have for Zeppelin. And while I had no qualms about Led Zeppelin II going down -- it is indeed a bunch of recycled blues tunes -- Physical Graffiti and Presence are masterpieces. Plus, for someone who names himself after a place in Tolkien's books, I'm surprised you [Forostar] have so little respect for the band that put Tolkien on the rock-n-roll map!

Never knew that. Any particular song/album in question?

:applause:

And as usual CFH hits right on centre!!
No Bonham unprecedented drumming, Page's unbelievable accord sequences, Plant's from an other world delivery.

Now, all we have to do is wait and see :smiley eating pop corn:

Walls of Jericho, Helloween's first album, is everything but generic. The use of such drum style was done in a few songs by other bands such as in Let Us Prey/Call for the Priest by Priest, but Helloween made a trademark of it.
Speedy songs with melodic guitar work and slashing riffs. It's like they mixed the best elements of Bay Area metal bands and Judas Priest, with the melodic wit of Iron Maiden. Yes, my friends, besides Maiden*, there are not that many bands making so much use of speed, tempo changes and melody as Helloween.

This was the basis of the power metal genre. While Kai's voice was rough (and not always 100% on key), he hardly had an accent as many other German singers. And he could scream. A great combination, fitting well to the aggressive side of their music.

What I get from this post is that Helloween mixed a bunch of stuff that has been done before. Nothing really new here. Which is my problem with Kai anyway, he's a great player but he's hardly original. Even Iron Savior is filled with Judas Priest ripoffs, though I'm aware that he hardly wrote the stuff on that album. But he did write Gamma Ray's music, and the amount of ripoffs by that band (and I've heard every album) is a bit shocking. At one point I think they even began to ripoff themselves. And since you mentioned, I don't really like power metal drums.

Now despite all of this, there is material that I like. Both Keeper albums are good, The Dark Ride has cool moments, Heading For Tomorrow is the best GR record, and Rebellion In Dreamland is epic. Sail On would be my favorite song.

At least not a single album of Zeppelin is doing much better. A comforting thought that this overrated band is not that overrated with us Maidenfans. We want more besides whining and unoriginal blues and crappy, uninteresting lyrics.
Though not as bad as Helloween's out of key singing, unoriginal speed metal and crappy uninteresting lyrics. :D

No it's about Vikings. And yes No Quarter is one of my favourites too.
