Phase 1, Round 11:

Only voting Visigoth. Dark Empire would have been a second, but meh.

That Light in the Black cover seems competent at first, but the more I listened, the more I felt like it robbed the song of all of its feeling.

The Knife
Never heard the original, but I'm sure this cover has better vocals :P It's a cool song; they really put their stamp on it and it sounds like a normal power metal song. Gets my 1st vote.

A Light In The Black
Obviously this isn't as good as the legendary original, but it's still a fun spin on it. It's a bit faster which helps the singer who would usually struggle with the higher parts. Either way it's hard to replicate Dio. Most of the appeal this song has for me is in the solos and they are perfectly replicated here. Anyway, gets my 2nd vote.

Surfin' Bird
Never heard the original. This song just sounds too silly with awful unintelligible vocals.

Raining Blood
Brings nothing new to the legendary original song except for awful vocals.

Necropolis
Never heard the original. Apart from the annoying way the guy sings "Necropolis", it's quite a solid song... would've been my 3rd choice in this round.

Dark Empire - A good one, but the vocals are annoying, sorry. :D

Paradox - Completely forgettable. By the book, just a cover for cover's sake.

Sodom - Fun, but I probably wouldn't listen to it for a second time. And I somewhat like Sodom.

Vader - Again, by the book, it sounds completely lifeless to me. No idea why.

Visigoth - My only vote, this time around. Probably the only one I would return to.

Phase 1, Round 11 Results:
Necropolis and The Knife are promoted; A Light In The Black, Surfin' Bird and Raining Blood are eliminated.

Phase 1, Round 12:

Went with Metallica and Atomic Bitchwax here .. could have done Dream Theater as well. Never been a fan of Watchtower

Tame is not my favourite DT cover, Metallica's covers are usually great, but I just can't bring myself to really cheer for Hammett & Hetfield covering Dio and Blackmore and Atomic Bitchwax keep it way too close to the original. So my votes go to Moonsorrow and Hendrix, though I like both songs much more in their original version.

To Tame A Land
Original is one of my favorite Maiden songs. This cover is weird. LaBrie's vocals are absolutely horrible, drum sound is bad and while guitar/keyboard interplay brought something new it could've been done much better. Still it's one of their best covers... they aren't really good at them tbh.

Ronnie Rising Medley
Metallica, on the other hand, always had good covers. It's a tough job covering songs sung by Dio but James did a pretty good job although he didn't have too many hard parts in this medley. They picked best parts from each of these songs and apart from Lars they all did a pretty good job. This gets my 1st vote.

For Whom The Bell Tolls
One of the most original covers in the game IMO. Moonsorrow pretty much transformed a thrash metal anthem into a viking battle song. It isn't better than the original, but it's surely more epic. Gets my 2nd vote.

Maybe I'm A Leo
Never really rated the original, same goes for the cover.

All Along The Watchtower
Most overrated cover of all time. I just don't get it.
