Anybody up for a forum collaboration?

I'll do bass. I'll also announce: last call for any other drummer. I'm going to start learning Alexander on drums after I post this.

I will note for Yax: given that I have only one condenser mic, that stays on my hi-hat, as I'm rather particular about a good hi-hat sound. The other mics may not be perfect for cymbals, but they're what I've got. In my experience, there is no lack of cymbal sound, as I promise that I hit the cymbals hard enough:

(The very Live After Death that started all this madness for me in 1986 for scale.)

So I'll record a rehearsal take for Yax to comment on, but I think my current mic setup will work fine. I'll also give advance warning that I have my own bass sound using some effects including compression, so that's what you'll get, not a 'clean' bass sound. I provide my onstage bass sound, Mr. Yax Shirley. :shred:

Also, what's the fun in a Maiden collab if they're doing Trooper or Number like everyone else...Pick something rare from the Blaze era. Now that's something!!

Trying to approximate Nicko's insane right foot using double bass. Working up this beat:

Code:
   1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a
LH x x
RF x x x x
LF x x x

With 8ths on the hihat for the verses and ride for the chorus.

You'd be surprised though at how seldom hi-hat mics are actually used to any real extent- It's often used as a way to get drummers to hit the hihat less hard, by sending a lot of it to the drummers headphones during recording. :p
I've used it to broaden the stereo image a bit combined with room and OH, and recently sidechained to OH bus compressor on an old project (that I revisited yesterday - Worked a few hours and it's 10 times better than when I initially made it. It's often like that: You hear it a lot of the times and your perception of it gets totally clogged. Revisit and you'll do much better. Will likely redo this collab a couple of times too :-P ) och because there was too much hihat, to bring it down.

I'd rather suggest placing it as a mono overhead around the top of the snare, and then use one of the tom mics as a substitute for the broken condenser on the other side of the kit to get some sort of AB overheads.
And then I'll tweak and EQ and this and that.

And then sample the toms in your kit afterwards with close mics (one per drum) with mono Overhead = Playroom for Yax. Have faith.

Oh, and your video camera could work as room mikes.

I'm perfectly fine with your bass sound though. :)

We should just do a Best of The Blaze Years forum collaboration album.

Blaze songs are great to sing because you can actually work with them and adapt them to your voice, whereas with someone like Bruce you either have to do an imitation or cut off your nuts to hit the notes.
