American and European Metal

There is something about BYOB that I just like.  Granted its weird, and the 'yodling' is a little weird, but I still like it.

SOAD (that's right, it's System Of A Down, not The Down) is OK. Not my style of music, but I appreciate that they're at least trying to sound a bit different from everyone else.

I like them more than a lot, I appreciate their activism and the fact that they don't forget their (oriental) origines
also I'm admiring Rubin's work, and I thing that SOAD is just the perfect reflection of his sound
especially Toxicity & Mezmerize albums

I've never liked them much, but my friend is a huge SOAD fan and that's sort of made me stand them.  Some songs I really actually like.

In my opinion, no matter how much they try, they still sound like a pale imitation of Faith No More, especially their last two albums.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter who likes/hates what. What matters is, does a particular band have an edge.In my opinion SOAD, RATM, Faith No More, Soundgarden even Dragonforce etc do.Nickelback and their ilk however play it too safe to be granted space on a metal fans forum.

Going back to the original thread which I appreciate i've joined a little late, I think mainstream American metal has done its best to hinder the development of global metal in general and I'll use the NWOBHM as an example. There was a time when Angel witch, Tygers of Pan Tang, Witchfynde etc were cutting edge both live and on vinyl, however when it came to the crunch and they produced their first albums, they were over produced, sounding too slick and polished principally to cater for the American market.Diamond Head were another example. Was it a coincidence that they disappeared after showing so much promise?
Thankfully the likes of Iron Maiden kept true to their roots and managed to survive.

I understand that Metallica nearly ended because they could't get any airplay due to the saturation of the media by the likes of Motley Crue and all the other cock rock crap.

I don't know if the American market is quite so important now, but imagine how the evolution of metal would have been affected if mainstream American music had maintained its stranglehold.Quite simply, I dont think we would have had any evolution.Thats why I've such an aversion to the likes of Nickelback.

Anyone listened to the swedish power metal band Sabaton ? really enjoying their music, a lot of their songs are based on ww2 battles etc

Wow this thread was dormant for so long didn't notice the new post. While a discussion on Sabaton is better suited in a band specific thread I'll say that I've heard of them, have yet to listen to anything by them.

(I know this is an old conversation) But I really like SOAD. BYOB, Chop Suey, Toxicity, all good songs. It's not for everyone though, of course.

I like A7X too! I find them to be too hit and miss for me though. I'm really interested in how their future turns out.

Just stumbled upon a young band from Serbia called Burning Circle, and I like it a lot! Have a listen:
.

It's heavy/prog metal, just progressive enough to keep things interesting, without being akin to "we wrote this song in the 49/8 measure". The vocals are very good, masculine and clean, they only resort to growling/screaming a few times on the album, thankfully.

Edit: It's their debut album, just released, and it's available in its entirety on YouTube for free.

They are such an odd band for me...I think "Waking the Fallen" is one of the best American metal albums of the last decade, but I cannot stomach anything else they have done. Every time they release something new, I give it a listen in hopes that it will yield something worthwhile, but it hasn't happened yet.

Waking The Fallen is very different than any of their other albums, so that makes sense. I haven't really been into A7x for a few years, though there are still some songs I really like, their new song has left me cold. Might be the first time I skip one of their albums when it comes out.

"Hail to the King"? You know, it sounds way too much like Metallica worship, but I like it. If the new album sounds more like that, I might check it out.
