2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia (Maidenfans WC Pool inside)

I don't think it's wrong to say that Spain ran into one of the greatest single-player performances of all time yesterday, though the team was enabling it correctly.

Calling Ronaldo's display from yesterday one of the greatest of all-time is hyperbole. He was great, and the nerves it takes to score that last freekick is prety crazy. But his first goal was from a penalty, and his second was a goalkeeping blunder.

People say this like it takes away from the achievement. He was good enough to draw the penalty, and good enough to be in position for the goalkeeper to screw up. Not the greatest performance, of course - but really, when you look at it, it's gotta be up in the top fifty or so (compared to x tens of thousands individual performances at the World Cup).

If you take the pressure of the World Cup into account, it certainly is a top performance from Ronaldo, but "among the greatest of all time"? None of us has been around for long enough to have a qualified opinion of that :D

Also, I'll go against the flow of this last page and support our Danish neighbours. The Danish football fans have become a lot less condescending towards Norway after a Norwegian manager (Åge Hareide) took them back to the World Cup after they missed out in 2014.

My take on the Ronaldo vs. Messi debate:

In recent times, I think Portugal and Real Madrid adapted their game for Ronaldo's benefit, while it was the opposite with Messi with Argentina and Barcelona.

Ronaldo was slowly losing pace so he moved to play more up front with less dribbling and less participation in buildup, which resulted in many clutch goals for him. Real Madrid also kept quite a steady lineup in the past few years. They have great attacking fullbacks, complete midfield with 3 very different players plus a varied set of wingers to support him.

Whereas Barcelona lost Dani Alves, Xavi, Pedro, Neymar, now Iniesta who combined with Messi enough so that he didn't have to do everything himself. Now he's the main creative outlet and their biggest goalscoring threat (with Suarez declining fast), so opposing teams just triple defend him which ultimately seals the fate for the whole team. Might turn out better for Barca now that they have Coutinho (who didn't play CL with them, hence the elimination) and with Dembele not getting injured all the time. Argentina is far worse considering they have a shittier defence and a shittier midfield and can't fit all their strikers into one formation.

Player vs player - Ronaldo is better at penalties and headers, Messi at dribbling and scoring from midfield, both are pretty clutch in the box though.

The Mexicans have begun by attacking strong, going deep into German territory and striking hard.

The Germans are like, bitch please we invented that.
