DAWSON 1 YEAR ON

Of course it’s not what you wrote, but it’s not an uncharitable read of stating it dismissively like that. For someone keen to make people be clear that a given statement is an opinion, you’re sometimes very definitive in your own statements.
As I clarified in the edit, that was simply my opinion. People are free to discuss whatever they want.

You don’t think they should aim for a drummer much better than a post-stroke 70+ year old just because that’s the choice they made then fine, but I think they could be more ambitious because I love this band.
That's not what I said either :)

Of course Nicko fluctuates tempos, it’s part of being a breathing, dynamic live band and not some gridded backing track nonsense. That’s not the problem with the new hire, he seems pretty solid tempo wise although the power of his hits seem to be pretty inconsistent. But Simons baseline tempos are noticeably slower than we’re used to hearing, and I agree with other posters that it makes the tunes sound lumpy and leaden.
The whole point of the discussion wasn't that Nicko fluctuates. He always did that, live AND in the studio. The point was that in 2023/2024 he fluctuated far more than he did before, to the detriment of the music.

Most people aren’t trying to change anyone’s mind, but the discussion here about this has been weird. The tone of “Steve made a choice and we just have to bally well get along with it” is one I cannot jive with.
Which is completely fine. As I stated, that was simply my opinion. That's what fora are for after all, to share our opinions. Just as you are free to voice your valid view, so am I.

I have a somewhat unusual opinion. But for me, this is the only way everything fits together:

Not only was Simon announced so low-key, more importantly, nothing has changed to this day - he is still not included in interviews, not even occasionally, there has never been a profile of him, for example, in the fan magazine or anything like that.

I think he was meant to be an interim drummer while Steve decides what the future holds. Whether they willl continue touring or make an album...

For that period, he wanted someone who could play the songs reasonably well and with whom he definitely gets along.

Now that decisions about the future have been made, the real selection process will take place - who knows, maybe even right now, during the break in the tour.
Depending on the outcome, maybe an announcement will then be made that their touring drummer, Simon, is unfortunately no longer available for personal reasons.
While this would be disappointing for Simon, he will still be extremely grateful for the experience and there won't be any bad blood.

That's not quite right. On one of the recent tour video where the other band members spoke to the camera, Simon had a short segment in that as well.

I guess they simply wanted someone who doesn't rock the boat, just does what he's told and that's it.

You clearly don’t understand anything about these guys.

You clearly don’t understand anything about these guys.

Recent surprising decisions and statements from band member have made me very skeptical about such claims.
Just one example: Some people here “knew” for sure that it wasn’t like Maiden to add “Infinite Dreams” to the second leg…

I now think a lot of things are possible…

I still can't understand why some people always talk about Joe Lazarus and how come that he didn't get the gig. I mean, he is as close to Maiden as someone could be. I'm sure there is a good reason why Simon was choosen, and not Joe.

There’s something to that.
Maybe he himself believed that being able to play in a style very close to Nicko’s was his greatest advantage, and yet that might have been a key reason why they decided against him.

I can guarantee that the reason Simon was chosen had more to do with personality. I don't know him, but I can only assume that Steve was far more comfortable picking someone he knows is probably easy to work with, goes with the flow, and won't rock the boat.

Joe Lazarus is Steve's nephew, right? He's also in his 30s. That's a lot of life differences and blurred family lines to cross, regardless of his ability.

And if they are planing to do 2 or 3 tours more one drummer that steve knows its more easy.

As you all know, I am a renowned and highly reliable investigator. Therefore, allow me to offer you a hint, my fellow Ignorants. Those who are wise and well-educated will understand my words and remember them for the future:

Joe is Lazarus. He was the Resurrected Friend. :dead:

Dawson has been with the band a year now, and in my opinion, he simply has not gelled with the band. He does not drive the band in the way a drummer should. Moreover, he drags them back. The band are often trying to charge ahead, but are held back by Dawson.

It’s not only the tempos are all so slow, it’s his lack of power. He doesn’t have the solidity of Clive, nor the flair or the flourishes of Nicko. Often he is lost in the mix, as the engineer cannot gauge one hit to the next, such is his inconsistency.

I’m not alone in this opinion. Look at the YouTube comments on any video of the current line up.

Harris has pulled another Blaze Bayley. A decent musician but who is NOWHERE NEAR equipped to be in a band of this stature.
I got absolutely slaughtered on another post saying just this

Found this video. It's the details that Simon misses. Wasted Years, a relatively simple song, is LITTERED with details by Nicko. Kick accents on the chorus, left hand hi-hat hits, following Steve with the kick... Yes, Nicko was on fire during SIT and SSOASS, but still, you need to incorporate at least some of those.

Also, didn't clock the gated Phil Collins style snare sound before.

I would love to listen an simon isolate drums to see if he is that bad. Of coursr nicko fills the song and thats the first thing we all notice. Still think that i dindt see something horrendous or something evident missing like when nicko was sick the first song and we all know that he wasnt ok

I never liked the songs being played faster than the studio versions, and if Simon brings the tempo down, that is fine for me.
