Of course it’s not what you wrote, but it’s not an uncharitable read of stating it dismissively like that. For someone keen to make people be clear that a given statement is an opinion, you’re sometimes very definitive in your own statements.

As I clarified in the edit, that was simply my opinion. People are free to discuss whatever they want.

You don’t think they should aim for a drummer much better than a post-stroke 70+ year old just because that’s the choice they made then fine, but I think they could be more ambitious because I love this band.

Of course Nicko fluctuates tempos, it’s part of being a breathing, dynamic live band and not some gridded backing track nonsense. That’s not the problem with the new hire, he seems pretty solid tempo wise although the power of his hits seem to be pretty inconsistent. But Simons baseline tempos are noticeably slower than we’re used to hearing, and I agree with other posters that it makes the tunes sound lumpy and leaden.

The whole point of the discussion wasn't that Nicko fluctuates. He always did that, live AND in the studio. The point was that in 2023/2024 he fluctuated far more than he did before, to the detriment of the music.

Most people aren’t trying to change anyone’s mind, but the discussion here about this has been weird. The tone of “Steve made a choice and we just have to bally well get along with it” is one I cannot jive with.

Which is completely fine. As I stated, that was simply my opinion. That's what fora are for after all, to share our opinions. Just as you are free to voice your valid view, so am I.

I have a somewhat unusual opinion. But for me, this is the only way everything fits together:

Not only was Simon announced so low-key, more importantly, nothing has changed to this day - he is still not included in interviews, not even occasionally, there has never been a profile of him, for example, in the fan magazine or anything like that.

I think he was meant to be an interim drummer while Steve decides what the future holds. Whether they willl continue touring or make an album...

For that period, he wanted someone who could play the songs reasonably well and with whom he definitely gets along.

Now that decisions about the future have been made, the real selection process will take place - who knows, maybe even right now, during the break in the tour.
Depending on the outcome, maybe an announcement will then be made that their touring drummer, Simon, is unfortunately no longer available for personal reasons.
While this would be disappointing for Simon, he will still be extremely grateful for the experience and there won't be any bad blood.

That's not quite right. On one of the recent tour video where the other band members spoke to the camera, Simon had a short segment in that as well.

I guess they simply wanted someone who doesn't rock the boat, just does what he's told and that's it.
