I thought the same.

Kind of disappointing that they will end the tour without visiting South America and Asia. No 2nd leg in Europe is also surprising. They were originally hyping this tour up as their biggest yet.

I think he's hinted he's a bit burnt out in interviews leading up to this current leg of the tour. He's indicated that Ghost is going to go sit on the shelf for a little bit once the tour's wrapped. Can't say I blame him.

They've been around long enough that I think they will take about a year off, he can do his solo album, and then Ghost can do a hits tour of sorts before writing a new album. But I agree, he is likely burnt out and needs the time. Or maybe even come back with a residency instead of a tour.

From the tone of the interviews, I wouldn't be surprised if it's anywhere from 3-5 years before Ghost comes back. In one interview he said that momentum is important, and if he loses it and it's never the same, he's fine with that.

When they do come back, I'd expect a mostly fresh pack of Ghouls behind him. I imagine he's released everyone from whatever contracts they might have so they can pursue other work. Some will likely find permanent gigs.

Overall, I'm not terribly surprised by the hiatus. Tobias has bounced around musical genres a lot prior to Ghost hitting, and for someone like that to be stuck doing one thing that a huge amount of people expect and demand that he does has got to be confining. But, from the sound of it, it's mostly missing family, especially missing the bulk of his kids growing up due to touring with Ghost.
 
I think some elements of the fan base could be a reason for a potential hiatus. I get the feeling that some of them are insufferable and have develop some sort of para-social relationship with the band. Jutty Tylor was hounded out of the band by fans on Twitter. There were allegations that were never proven.

Although the lore has been important for bringing some fans in, I reckon he wants a break from all of that.

I was at that show and was surprised by that move, certainly does look like his way of thanking everyone knowing when Ghost do eventually return it could be a very different band backing.

I must say the show was flawless, anyone who claims Ghost rely on their gimmick and stage show to stay relevant is just plain wrong lol, while the visuals are impressive at no point did I think it over powered the music, plenty of times the band got extended instrumentals and traded solos etc, very tight band and overall sounded better than the studio versions.

The no phone policy creates a great atmosphere, seeing everyone fully engaged even singing along to the deeper cuts was fantastic.

Yeah, you got to respect the fact he's come out and said straight that he wants to hang this up for a while and spend time at home.

Was quite surreal seeing Tobias (Papa) just standing there soaking it all in while the crowd were losing it, then thanking everyone for making his dreams come true before walking off.

I got the feeling there is no way you can give that up, they will be back before we know it.
 
I was sorry to hear there won't be a second European leg of this tour, as I had a great time at the O2 show last year. It was definitely intended to be a full 2+ year touring cycle at the outset by the looks of things but it seems as if TF needs a long break. It has also been suggested that the scale of the production as well as TF's insistence on the no phones policy (which it must be said enhances the concert experience greatly in my opinion) ruling out festival slots has meant that touring in certain territories is not profitable. Allegedly even the recent American leg was not financially successful.

Hoping that we will see Ghost back in a year or two rather than the project being put to sleep for a longer span of time.
