Iron Maiden News, Links, and Interviews

Me too. I hate thr arguement that theres no money in physical media, yet many bands 'smaller' than Maiden do them. They could have really gone to town on LAD but yet again theres a real lack of creativy and thought into what the fans actually want.
they make millions with minimum effort. they know exactly what the majority of fans want.

I bought Rock Candy in the airport the other day (Oooh, I'm on holiday, go me), and yes, Steve totally throws Bruce under the bus re Only The Good Die Young. But hear me now, I don't necessarily think that it's because Bruce feels he can't sing it in terms of notes, as some have suggested or questioned.

Listen to it, it's quite hammy and performative. Maybe he just feels cheesy as fuck doin it. Not that he can't do it or doesn't like it but maybe just that as a 65 yr old man he doesn't feel the particular vibe for that particular song. Which is fine. Who are we to tell him otherwise?

All conjucture, fo sho but I reckon Bruce has a veto and he vetoed that song for reasons other than his capability to hit certain notes.
I missed this, and can't find it now. what is the exact quote Steve says about Only The Good Die Young?

It was in 2021 when some DJ/journalist was doing a Twitter listening party to SSOASS. There were lots of quotes attached to songs that would appear when you got to that particular song at the same time as everyone else. When it got to OTGDY, I remember the tweet saying something along the lines of ‘Steve Harris- I would love to play this live one day’.

At the end of the Twitter thread, this was posted…

yeah i know this old bit but people here says (few pages back) that Steve sort of blames Bruce for that song not to be included on a tour in the new Rock Candy interview. I wondered for that quote.

"I wouldn't have minded playing a couple of different things on the last tour, maybe "Only The Good Die Young" or something like that. But at the end of the day the singer of your band, obviously Bruce in our case, has to be comfortable with the song selection. They've got to be sure that they can go out and give a performance, and we've got so much stuff to choose from that we don't have to force something on somebody if they're not going to feel comfortable doing it."

I can't quite place OTGDY in recent setlists. Maybe an addition to the Maiden England one 10+ years ago, but it would be an oddly random addition to anything since then. It's like the hasty conclusion to the Seventh Son storyline.

Infinite Dreams or The Evil That Men Do, on the other hand, would slide in there nicely.

It’s a cracking song that deserves some recognition. TETMD is great, but overplayed. Infinite Dreams will never come back. OTGDY could have fitted in well on the RFYL or TFP tours.

It's cool that Steve is kind of pushing for playing more rare/different songs. We missed Only The Good Die Young, Infinite Dreams and Parchment... I can understand Bruce for songs like Runner, Aces(!), Land, etc...

Agreed, about fitting too. And why can't a setlist have one not fitting song (I guess the theme?), ME and SBIT tours had (a big hit though). Btw, I definitely expect Evil to be back on the next tour.

I think you could also interpret that as, from "at the end of the day" onward, to be just a general point that Bruce picks the set, and not necessarily infer that they had some big debate about OTGDY or any other track. He might not even have discussed any of these "couple of different things" with Bruce at all.

Sorry, but what is so special about hearing OTGDY? To me it is a good song but not great, not something I crave to hear live. But as I see, lot of people want to hear it. Is it because it really is so great or is it because Steve randomly mentioned it (I don't remember that people were crazy about it before that) or is it just because it hasn't been played live? Kinda like Sun and Steel, out of nowhere people believe it should be played live. Was not a singel, probably 6th-7th song in terms of popularity, quality. And I would say OTGDY is same, also maybe 6th (or 7th) best song on SSOASS. So what's the deal?

To me, Only the Good Die Young is mystically interconnected with Priest’s One Shot at Glory. Maybe because of the “O.” But aren’t the songs themselves also rhythmically similar?

To me, OTGDY is a great song off of one of Maiden's best albums and seems like a song that would work well live (as opposed to something like The Prophecy) and is one of only 2 tracks they never played from Seventh Son live. Which I guess means folks think it has a shot, but I pretty much believe that Alexander was the extreme outlier here and we'll never see something like that unearthed ever again.

For better or worse.
