USA Politics

Bernie's problem is he does really poorly with minorities and not really all that well with women
He does very well with Latinos — it’s mostly black support that he lacks.

Bernie vs. Trump, I think Bernie holds the rust belt and it‘s a struggle to see if he can pick off any other swing states to win.

Biden vs. Trump, they have to hope he can take Pennsylvania, not lose more than 1 or 2 rust belt states, and drive enough turnout to win some Obama swing states.

Either way, Trump will call the nominee a socialist. In Biden’s case he will also call him slow and corrupt. Both options are risky for the Democrats.

Trump calling Biden a socialist will only hold water for the most politically illiterate conservatives. Him calling Sanders a socialist would be consistent with what Sanders calls himself - something I've long felt was a foolish move on Sanders' part since his platform isn't socialistic but social democratic.

Keep in mind that American political terminology is very different from European. I don't recall ever hearing the term "social democrat" in an American context.

Yeah, that is a pretty new term. On a general note, I think the "we Europeans would call this 'x'" is pretty pointless, it is a US election, so of course the terms are relative to American politics, which has it's own history and culture that is vastly different from Europe/Asia/Middle East, South America, etc.

I think The Flash has made reference to this before, such as the misuse of "Liberal" by Americans.
Not to mention money .. TV stations probably love the guy though
I'm sure that's all just loose change for Mini Mike. He can find that down the back of the sofa and make it all up by the end of next week. I saw one of his ads when I was in the US before Christmas. American political ads make me chuckle - always "I am insert name and I approve this message" at the end. He also turned up at the conference I was attending to talk about his plans for the climate. I didn't bother trying to go as it would have been almost impossible to get into the room. It was streamed on Youtube but I forgot to watch as I was sitting in a cafe reading a magazine.
I don't like the way Sanders is elevated to messianic levels by some of his supporters, and I think he's too old. The former is arguably not his fault, but I have a deep mistrust, based on experience, towards people who are being sanctified; there will inevitably be a let down moment and he will draw excessive hate on himself for every promise he can't fulfil
This was a massive issue I had with Jeremy Corbyn over here. He was deified by his supporters and treated like the messiah. Politicians should never be treated like that.
Biden was arguing that he brought out more people who typically don’t vote last night.
That's surprising to me, but obviously I'm very much an outsider in all of this and most of what I know about US politics is from this thread. However, I just can't see why anyone would be excited by the prospect of Joe Biden as president. He's been around the block time and time again, doesn't bring anything new to the table and seems to be a bumbling senile old man too often.

I'm still rooting for Tulsi Gabbard and the non-interventionist policy. She got one delegate in American Samoa. :(

Well you didn't hear it because it never became prominent. Sanders calls himself a democratic socialist, that isn't a phrase you'd recall having ever heard in an American context either, for the same reason.

I've written on that issue on multiple occasions. I am very pedantic and I value nuanced thinking greatly, so it bothers me.

They should just stop the whole circus now that it seems clear that Trump will win either way. And this is coming from (apparently this forum's only) Biden supporter.
Trump is far from being guaranteed a win here. Let’s see how the whole Coronavirus business plays out, and how extended the economic impact from it is. Part shortages are likely to start hitting in April/May, so the economy will probably stay down for a while. The question is whether it’s going to roar back right before the election or not.

There’s also a great opportunity for anti-Trump ads if his opponents play it right. Spend the entire last week before the election running ads that are just a slow zoom in on some picture of him looking angry, with his own voice on the audio track re-running his worst comments, and ending with “Had Enough?”, or something to that effect. You’ve got to turn white suburban women’s stomachs right before they vote, and turn out as many people on the left as you can.

Biden may also want to try to take the sting out of “Sleepy Joe” by owning the name. Even if he just makes stupid grandpa jokes about “Yeah, sure, I’m Sleepy Joe because I have so much experience I could do this job in my sleep!”, anything to blunt Trump’s relentless nicknaming would help.

And don’t underestimate the President’s penchant for self-defeating behavior. In 2016 he was an amusing fireball outsider who sounded like a bizarre populist. In 2020 he’s a well-known quantity — either you like his policies and are willing to tolerate his behavior because you think the ends justify the means, or you see him for the hypocritical, lawless, treasonous, amoral, idiotic, chronically lying sack of shit that he really is. There’s only a tiny slice of the electorate that actually thinks he’s smart and honest, and like Trump said, he loves the poorly educated...

He is far from a guaranteed win, BUT he is closer with Biden as an oponent than Sanders, IMO. Biden has WAAAAY more skeletons in his closet beyond his age and voting record. The Ukraine, thing, the touchy feely thing, being tied to Obama is just as damaging as it is something to boast. With Sanders.... he's.... old? and a commie? Oh no! I would love to see Sanders ACTUAL straight shooter style against Trump's pseudo "tell it like it is" style in a debate. Much more intersting and productive than against Biden.

I'd been thinking something similar. I doubt any of us think that Trump and Pence know how to handle the Coronavirus outbreak properly. Mike Pence chaired a meeting of some response group in some plush looking coffee room at the White House and all they did was pray. Good job Mike! A couple of nights ago on the BBC they had some Republican broadcaster lady called Scottie talking about this and she said that there is concern in the administration that this could turn out to be Trump's Katrina - when Bush sat on his hands and did nothing for New Orleans then sent Condaleeza Rice as the token black person to placate the thousands of people who'd been affected. If Trump and Pence mishandle this (which is highly likely), and Bernie gets the nomination, healthcare could be the main issue in the election campaign. I suspect Bernie's ideas of healthcare will be far more appealing if the virus becomes widespread in the US over the coming months and Trump doesn't really have the intellect to deal with this situation.

I might agree with Trump... for once. Also: Sanders explains the differences with Biden's ideas/record. And responds to Warren's opinion on his opposition/record.

Michael Moore defends Sanders (this was before Super Tuesday happened): ‘If we vote on fear, we will lose to Donald Trump’:

Sanders, the day after Super Tuesday:

SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY! The battle of the two old, white men! One has a questionable voting record and hugs for WAY too long! The other has looked 1000 years old since 1981!

Next week will tell the story .. Bernie needs to win Michigan and Washington to have any kind of chance.

Governor of Michigan endorsed Biden for what it is worth
