USA Politics

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

It is true that some precincts have not reported yet, but 100% of the precincts in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties have reported.  The ones that are still trickling in are from the rural counties who are expected to overwhelmingly vote in favor of Proposition 8-- which presumably is why the LA Times feels safe in calling this a done deal.  Surprisingly, a slight majority of voters in  Los Angeles County voted for the ban on gay marriages, notwithstanding that LA is a fairly liberal city with lots of gay folks.

Let this not detract from Obama's historic victory.  While I am much more conservative than Obama and have criticized his proposed economic policies in this thread, as a national symbol and a statesman, he's a hell of a lot better than the guy he will be replacing.

What I wonder about is all those same sex couples that got married earlier in the summer...

See my earlier post regarding ex post facto laws.  Probably still have to be recognized in California, just as a gay marriage in, say, Massachusetts probably will still need to be recognized in California.

My favorite is the first one. But yes, the last one is very amusing as well...well, poor girl. Poor, stupid, girl.

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

I thought it was classic when Sarah Palin said they had talked about it, and it was her own CHOICE to keep the baby...
then she made herself a campaign platform which focused on taking AWAY said choice...  :nuts2:

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

I just heard that Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger may be Obama's Energy Secretary.

Very interesting development!

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

That would be a brilliant idea. And I'm not even kidding.

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

Same here. You change your environment policy or "I'll be back"!
He did pretty well during those California fires, didn't he? Quite an authority.

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

I think it would be a good choice as well. I must admit that I am very surprised but he has done a fine job in California and the people there love him.... I guess there is more to him than muscles and limited acting ability.

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

I'll admit I don't know anything about his politics, but I still gotta post this one, I thought it was right on the money:

Obama's doing exactly what I hoped he would - look for the best people for the jobs regardless of party affiliation.  Ahnold would certainly help terminate the foreign oil dependency - one of the first things he did as governator was figure out how to both reduce California's energy reduction AND obtain energy from other sources (including buying a lot from Canada at a reduced, I'll go back in time and kill your mother rate).  He's huge on alternate energy sources.

Senator Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) remains the front-runner for Secretary of Education and it looks like Defence will come down to a Republican - Chuck Hagel (R-Somewhere), Colin Powell, or Robert Gates.  We may see Colin Powell in other areas - National Security Advisor again, or possibly Secretary of Education if Snowe turns it down.  Arlen Specter (R-Pennsylvania) may be asked to join the cabinet as well.

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

I think that is great all around.  CNN mentioned that, due to his wins in some typically red states (indiana comes to mind, and what he did in VA), that he really owes his win to a lot of centrists, and should reward the voters by choosing 'across the aisle'.  Good on him if this all works out.

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

If any of these pan out it would be good ol' fashioned democracy :p Like the good ol' days when the VP was the LOSER of the presidential race... just one more time... good ol'

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

With the election over, the title of this thread is no longer appropriate. I'm changing the title to "USA Politics".

...and I get to be the first one to post since the title change...  :yey:

Now, if only I could think of something wort posting...

two shorts thoughts about US

1) it's unbelievable how Europe's opinion about US changed from one day to another; there is a huge sympathy, interest and curiosity regarding the change that everybody expect from this country

2) it's also hugely unbelievable that a governor of a state (Palin) ignores if Africa is a continent or a country -this is the projection of a deep and serious problem that none election can settle

There is a huge sympathy, interest and curiosity regarding the choice of the Americans. But there's hope as well.
Why not?

Still, I wouldn't like the USA to be so busy with themselves (2 wars, financial crisis, solving many problems etc. etc.) that their watchful eye on the world will slowly close and that their internal struggles will deafen their listening ear for major issues as the global climate crisis.

You mean ignorance, a word which is kind of taboo on this forum?

of course there is hope, huge amounts of it
personally I have also a worry about this great guy; Kennedy comes to mind

ignorance is the one side of the problem, the other I don't know how to call it; I mean is the citizens who voted for her right ??
but outside citizens, I can't understand how the concerning party (whichever it is) promote these kind of members to the top
...I mean, take the poorest country in Africa; there is no way that federal state governors don't speak 2 languages at least
and have a proper overall education -their level of education is higher than the average in their country

ps : yes now I'm thinking the best word to describe it is ignorance

I have heard all the pundits speak about her lack of knowledge.  However, I haven't seen the actual interview or transcript of her saying that.  It is really easy for unhappy aides to take shots at her without needing to provide proof.  I'm not necessarily defending her, but I can think of situations where they would take her words, twist them, and make them sound bad.  I'm not denying her saying this, tho I do have a hard time believing that she actually said that.

I've seen enough other examples to know what this woman stands for.
To put it mildly: I am very relieved that the majority of the Americans preferred someone else.
