Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

I just got back from voting.  I must say, there was a tremendous sense of enthusiasm among the voters at my polling place, more than I have noticed in the past.  Presumably this reflects excitement about the expected election of Obama, which is undeniably historic and significant, whether you support him or not.

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

I'm going to a bar later to watch the results come in, state by state. I am very excited.
Not least about the happy hour prices on offer.

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

Have fun! It'll sure be exciting. The whole world is watching your event, yankees. More than ever!

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

yeah historical day! the first afro-American president -if I'm not wrong USA is the very first developped country to dare this
plus he is such a charismatic person -the world is turning page now  :)

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

Besides a boring Maple Leafs game (they typically are) nothing much is going on tonight except the US elections.

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

McCain made a very respectful speech as did Obama. Obama also mentioned all these "minorities", including the gays, so I was excited.

Yay!!!

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

All I know is that they decriminalized marijuana in Massachussetts! :)

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

Proposition 8 - to ban gay marriage in California - has failed.

Similar measures passed in Arizona and Florida, though, sadly.

Don't get too excited. State law is still trumped by federal law, where it is still illegal. Any such law change is purely symbolic until federal law is changed.

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

By the way, did anyone else see the CNN holotechnology?

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

I did.  I thot it was pretty cool.  My kids and I grilled hotdogs and sat around the tv watching the election all night.  I thought it was good coverage, and they explained pretty well how they were 'projecting' winners when there was less than 1% reporting.  My kids learned a lot last night.

I wish you so, but promises and actions are two different things  :)

*facepalm*

When a ballot initiative passes it becomes the law of the land.

Not sure where you get your news, but according to the LA Times and the NY Times, it appears as though it has passed.  Perhaps that's the purpose of your "facepalm."  I never really paid much attention to Proposition 8 -- I always vote against every proposition, no matter what -- but as I understand it, it is for an amendment to the California Constitution.  I don't really know what more, if anything, needs to happen for it to be formally incorporated into the Constitution.

EDIT: One question now being posed is what happens to gay marriages that took place in the period between the time that San Francisco began allowing them, contrary to law (that practice was upheld, and the law overturned, by the California Supreme Court -- hence the need for the measure to be a Constitutional amendment), and today.  I'm straining to think back to my Constitutional Law courses, but I'm fairly certain that ex post facto laws, which retroactively criminalize behavior or void contracts, are generally not permissible.

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

That saddened me greatly. Everybody was so happy that Obama won and they were praising the gains of African-Americans and whatnot, but as LC pointed out some states passed initiatives to define marriage as the union between a man and a woman. So much for change and progress as the gains of one minority are praised while the rights of another continue to get trampled. The more things change the more they stay the same :(
