USA Politics

I think moving to another country over an election result is pretty stupid and uprooting your entire life ... I can see it for plenty of other reasons .. like it there, job opportunity, want to do something different, don't have many roots where you are, etc.

But still, and back to the Dem backing celebrities, I really do think they almost hurt more than they help. Nothing like connecting to voters by saying, I'll just move to a house I already have in some other country and leave you guys high and dry .. then of course not do it anyway. Morons.

I've known a few Americans who've moved here over disappointment with one election or another. Considering my friend is quite gay, I can't say I blame her. She lives in Indiana too so it's unlikely her marriage will be protected if Obergfell is reversed.

We get a lot of that in the UK. Z-list celebrity X threatens to move to country Y if govt A gets elected. They all end up staying here.

I believe the exemption amount is something like $95,000 US, which is more like $120k Cdn, but I have already noted they need to check the IRS rules. But that's only if you want to go back to the US anyway.
You still have to file returns if you think you ever would go back to the US ... always a possibility you get there and decide you do not like it or something pops up with your family in the US, etc that would want to make you want to move back .. or you just like the result of the next election or dislike the result of a Canadian election

Unless they get Canadian citizenship and renounce US citizenship, probably a good move to keep filing.

Considering the whole world situation, that's not relevant imo. But I assume you know full well how Trump already in advance blamed everything and everyone else just in case he might lose the election.

Oh, another conspiracy!

We've been having similar discussions here, and I can see both sides. Worthwile discussion, but it won't undo Trump's election.
In case it wasn't clear, I'm not advocating for the EC to vote against the electorate. I think that's that's a bad idea that will result in worse riots and set a bad precedent. It should be enough reason to revise the system though. Really it should've been fixed the first time it happened.

Romney would be a pretty solid pick ... Nikki Haley also seems to be up for it .. who would also be a good pick

Romney would be great. His corner of the Republican party will make a good ally for the Trump opposition in the next 4 years.

Many Americans move out over a variety of reasons, not just election results. I think it is brave to leave, regardless of reason, because as you said, in a lot of cases you are uprooting a whole life.

Sure I've lived here 16 years, but I have no home, i've finished school, and my wife and I have no children. What I do have is family in Mexico and oddly, just like my mother moved us here 16 years ago... a fresh start. My children will grow up as I did and get a quality education in the same, if not a similar private school that will prepare them for a university anywhere in the world.

I feel sorry for those that do not consider mexico as a viable option, because of the language barrier and can't go to canada due to their migration laws... I am fortunate to have family and dual citizenship.
