UK Politics

Feels like the UK is going to get whittled down to just England before too much longer at this rate. The next Scottish referendum is certain to succeed and that does feel like it'll give a boost to Irish reunification. It's impossible to understate how much the death of Elizabeth will impact this - she was vastly popular, even in Ireland and Scotland, and Charles isn't (even if Sturgeon has said an independent Scotland would originally retain the king, probably following the path of Ireland via the Irish Free State that was a Commonwealth realm. They're Scots anyhow), and the increased economic turmoil and border turmoil of Brexit will certainly increase the desire to exit the Union. Once one goes, that's going to embolden the other two, although Plaid Cymru might take some time to get it done.

Not sure how you can disagree with 95% of facts, there, wandy. Leaving the EU will be the moment where the UK's descent into irrelevance and economic hardship was guaranteed.

It really feels like a general election is sure to be called soon - the Conservatives can't keep playing whack-a-leader while Labour is running around with a ~60% vote intention. They've lost the consent to govern.

We left the EU because we lost our sovereignty, under the EU. They hated our country and disrespected our ppl. They thought we were a joke. Britain ISNT a f*cking joke. No sir. David Cameron went to the EU to get us a "better deal". He came back with nothing. And they couldn't wait to send the poor bar steward packing. Fk the EU. We are out and staying out. Mind you, if they want a referendum every 45 years about rejoining the EU I'm OK with that, I will be LONG dead before the next referendum. As for Scotland? Apparently they want "independence" by staying in the EU. They will be governed by the EU. Hmm, interesting, how can that be independence when the EU has sovereignty over Scotland. Strange kinda independence that is. And finally the best thing in Scotland is the ROAD TO ENGERLAND! ENGERLAND! ENGERLAND!!! Now how do we get Sir Donald of Trump as UK Prime Minister. Would have him all day long rather than Tories or Labour.

Yeah, I mean, I'm fine with Donald Trump as PM of the UK. Put him in charge of a ruined, no-account country instead of an actual superpower. Seems a smart strategy to get him out of the way.

You're extremely funny but not very educated, I'm afraid.

OK my bad. But clearly America won't be a "Super Power" for long once dementia man has finished with her. That guy should be in the old folks home p!ssing and 5h!tting in his pants with his grandkids by his side. Let's hope America is still a "super power" when Trump takes over again in 2024. Now tell me who's better than Trump at running the uk, because there is nobody on this side of the pond. Both Tories AND Labour are DONE!! Trump might even qualify seeing as his mother was British. Will give the great man something to do till he becomes President again in 2024 :-)

Is it possible to have a political discussion without tabloid name-calling?

Boris is not pro EU. He sold himself as leader on the back of 'getting Brexit done' when the then makeup of the House of Commons resulted in some aspects of the EU withdrawal causing a stalemate in the House.

He took Britain out of the EU, or presided over that process. Nobody actually ever had a working plan for EU withdrawal, and spent most of their time spouting rhetoric about taking Britain back (from who?) or getting rid of "Them".

It turns out that severing absolutely all links to the EU and refusing to come to any agreements on anything would cause all kinds of legal, political and economic mayhem that would do nobody any good, so he compromised in a few ways.

Leaving the EU has caused all sorts of chaos and negative knock on effects, anyway, but if leaving was more important to the majority than those effects, then so be it. I'm not certain how it could have been done in a more painless way for Britain. It could definitely have been done in a *more* painful way.

The European Court of Human Rights is currently protecting the rights of British Citizens. That's quite handy when a knee-jerk majority party could decide to scrap employment or disability rights on a whim to appease the latest handful of backbenchers threatening to revolt.

Neither you nor I control Britain's borders. The physical borders have authorities conducting checks. Economic borders and cultural borders barely exist today. Even the physical borders aren't impervious because there will always be people prepared to risk their lives on dinghies to get anywhere in the world safer or more prosperous than where they were born. All of Europe has this issue.

Not at all sure what anti-British is unless you can pin down what is quintessentially British. You'll probably find each Nation has major differences of opinion, let alone each region and each section of society.

Support for an unachievable and poorly defined ideal or notion is what is resulting in a ruling party failing to come up with a coherent policy and trying to tick incompatible boxes which won't work as a whole.

Boris and Farage cottoned on to the idea of waving a flag and coming up with feelgood slogans to get support. Neither had an actual plan to run a modern country.

Not sure what that even means. My advice is to stop smoking dope. You don't want to end up like sleepy Joe. :-(
At the risk of stating the obvious here, Trump stoked and attempted to personally lead an armed insurrection against the United States Congress. He is a seditionist who should be in federal prison and barred from ever holding public office in the U.S. again per the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. He has repeatedly proven that he doesn't believe in the basic principles of democracy and would prefer autocratic rule. Regardless of how you feel about his personality or his policy positions (whatever they happen to be in that particular moment), if you genuinely want Trump to be the leader of the U.K. then you either don't believe in the basic idea of democratic self-rule, or you are hopelessly misinformed.

Don't get your panties in a bunch , I was kidding :::rolls eyes::: Trump doesn't qualify to even be PM. Mind you i trust him more than "Rishi" or Claire Stammer. Both losers. Besides Trump has enough to do sorting out what might be left of the United States after dementia man has fkt up. Let's hope there is an America left intact for Trump to be President of in 2024.

Since this is the U.K. Politics thread I won't unpack that any further, but as a citizen of the U.S. I can assure you that we'd be in much better shape with a cinder block as President than with Trump in the office.

Lots of character based opinions and aspirations of national greatness doesn't run a country.

Appeasing these sentiments is exactly what results in leadership that's all PR and no plan.

You have a cinder block in charge already, and the world is laughing at you. How ironic this is considering they said the world was laughing at America when Trump was in charge ( and they weren't) One last thing, they said don't give Trump the nuclear codes!! He will start WW3. How ironic, that Trump should be the MOST peaceful President of the past 50 years. Do yourself a favour. Vote for Trump in 2024 before Sleepy Joe destroys America both in reputation and actuality.

Mark Twain: Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Kind of a fun fact, it is more likely for Trump to be PM than any of your former PM’s becoming US president, since you have to be born in the US to be president but just need to be a citizen to become PM (and if I’m not mistaken, citizenship for a commonwealth country is also applicable?).

Here's my saying. Far better than Mark Tw@t.
To beat an intelligent man ( or woman) in an argument is very difficult. To beat a fool is nigh on impossible. I bow to your superior stupidity. Now I'm done with this thread. It's been real fun. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!! ❤️
