Two-thirds of the teams progress from the groups, right?
Correct. Winner and runner-up of each group, plus the 4 best among the 3rd-placed teams.

Have to agree with @Shadow - many teams will take a low risk approach to the last game, knowing that a draw will most likely see them through.

Norway '94 being the most absurd example. The better team against Ireland in a 0-0 draw, taking few risks, but ended last in the only group in World Cup history where all teams took four points.

Lady luck smiling for Northern Ireland. It's a miracle that the match ended 1-0. They protected their goal difference as a result, probably gonna advance as one of the best 3rd placed teams.

Or he does as many others who are well into their 30s and want to prolong their club career. It's not very uncommon that top players retire from the national team years before they hang up their boots.

Look, it is very uncommon to mention this news during this stage in the tournament and when a Dutch journalist asks something, after the Swedish press is done with their work.

Totally out of the blue. Next year he'll probably change his mind again for the zillionth time.

It's not, actually. A lot of examples of players announcing their retirement after the tournament while the tournament was just about to begin or had been going on. Pavel Nedved is one. Announced his retirement from the national team during 2006 World Cup. Kept playing at club level for further 3 years.

I've never been a fan of Zlatan so great strawman there. (You edited it out, but I saw it)
