Somewhere in Time has some of the best solos ever, but they are not that consistently good as on AMOLAD.

Why would you say that ?

Caught Somewhere in Time : Both solos are amazing and among the best of both guitarists.
Wasted Years : A fabulous solo.
Sea of Madness : Three different great solos.
Heaven Can Wait : Dave's solo is above average and Adrian's licks behind the chorus middle section are good.
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner : Adrian's solo is pretty energetic (fitting the mood of that section) and Dave's solo is serves in as a good bridge.
Stranger in a Strange Land : My favorite solo of Adrian.
Deja Vu : This one doesn't contain a solo, but if the intro solo counts, it's awesome.
Alexander the Great : No words needed, top notch stuff.

I think the album is by far the most consistent in terms of solo quality.

I don't know why. Both albums are in my top three, so I love all their solos. I just find those on AMOLAD better overall. I find CSIT, SIASL and ATG slightly better than the rest on Somewhere in Time and probably that's why it doesn't feel that consistent to me.

Yeah that's because they're among the best of all time, it's not easy to come up with the greatest solos on every song :D AMOLAD is really consistent but it lacks the magnificence of some solos on SIT. There's only one AMOLAD solo on my H list while there are 4 SIT (three of them are Top 3), there's no AMOLAD on Dave list while there are 2 SIT.

I know, it's actually a shame that ATG, SIASL and CSIT make other great solos on the album seem almost unimpressive.

Yeah, I hear you.

Edit : This discussion made me realize once again how exquisite of an album Somewhere in Time is.

Sea of Madness was Foro's second favorite Maiden song if I'm not mistaken, seeing how the solos play a huge part in the greatness of that song, it doesn't come off as a surprise for me.

I'd say Wasted Years' solo doesn't fail to show its brilliance and triumphs in attempts to avoid getting over shadowed by "The Big Three".

I wasn't surprised either. But I just had to point it out, since his list is such a great secret.

I totally agree with what both you guys (Ariana and The Flash) are saying --some of the leads on SiT are so good, in comparison to the others (that are only very good) that the term "inconsistent" is technically applicable. However it's literally a case of all of them, in my view, being VG or exceptional (amongst the best). AMoLaD, for me, just has all VG leads. Therefore consistent, but not quite up there overall with SiT. And in a top ten, SiT material (from Adrian anyway) just pushed everything else aside.

Forostar --nice clip there. Maybe it really helped that he had written so much of the material himself (--& that the guitar work on SiT ain't that difficult! :p) When you listen to him doing SiaSL in 1999 the guitar tone is just so poor in comparison to what it sounded like live, like in the clip above.

I have not forgotten about it! Still in the midst of pre-selections. It's going to take long still, I'm afraid. Both due to the process itself but also because I'm doing other things. But at least I have done one guitarist. :)

Heard all his solos from 1981-2000 but haven't eliminated much yet. Three albums to go and then the hard work. Could take a few weeks still (no kidding; I am quite busy with other stuff.)
