Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 05/10/08)

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 09/08/07)

Hehe, good lad :)

Due to the numerous page coding problems at Putfile.com, including their insistance on testing new code on the live server rather than offline first, the 'Thingfishy's World Of Maiden' homepage can now be found at http://www.freewebs.com/thingfishy/, so please update your bookmarks if you're following my acoustic tracks! :) The files will still be kept online at Putfile.com, but you can also download them from http://www.notb.org/thingfish

It is naturally very difficult to follow a track like Paschendale in any situation, but especially when all you have left to work with, if you are to follow the pattern of 'one Bruce song, one Blaze song' like I have been, is one original B-side and two cover songs :) I have, however done my best, and like this next track all the same :D It is Steve's first direct criticism of modern society which only just didn't make it onto The X Factor due to time limitation...it is the excellent...

Nice rendition of my favourite Blaze b-side!
Love the backing vocals!
:ok:

I am curious what will be next! :)

Never heard the song before, to be honest.  I can't compare to the original version, but I must say that yours at least sounds really good!

As in a lot of your covers, I LOVE the solos!  They sound great as acoustic.

Glad you liked it, Foro...the next one will be another Brucie track...but we have so many left, which could it be? :D

Can't let a fellow Maiden fan suffer by not having heard some of their tracks, Invader :) Check your PMs! :D

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 12/08/07)

Thanks, I'm listening to it right now!  It's a good song, shame they didn't include it on the album.  I wouldn't have minded if it had replaced Man on the Edge.

Quite interesting to hear an acoustic cover first and then the proper song...  It was heavier than I would have imagined!

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 12/08/07)

I've never heard a cover version of a Maiden song before hearing the original, that would indeed be interesting! :) I don't imagine it'll ever happen for me now :(

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 12/08/07)

I return once more with another all-time classic track that Maiden unfortunately never got round to playing live which is a real shame, because I know it would have rocked heavily in concert! We can only hope against hope that they pull it out of the bag for a future 'History of Iron Maiden' tour, but I won't hold my breath! :)

It is the ever-wonderful...

Hope you all enjoy it!!

I've never been a great fan of the song, but you did a good job with it.

I hate to rain on your parade, though, but I think the commentary says the band never played it live  :(

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 29/08/07)

You need to read my post again, Invader :) I said that they never played it live :D I was hoping that they might in the future 'History Of...' tour that covers the 'Fear Of The Dark' album  :innocent:

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 29/08/07)

Ah, I misunderstood.  I thought you were hoping that they'd dig up a live recording of it somewhere.  To which I replied that it's never been played live, meaning that they couldn't do this.

Adding to the Fear of the Dark wishlist, I wish they'd play Childhood's End and The Fugitive  :)

Hey Thingfish! Long time no upload!
As I hear in your JBMG cover, it's another of your cover songs that fits damn well with your singing style, love especially the verse touch of alternating voices. The intro is kinda to low in terms of volume, but then the guitar goes well nice afterwards.

And how you sing the chorus is real sweet, reminds me of Ol' Brucie..

Nice touch in the solo, all the notes are well rounded and fun to listen to..

Another good job, if I say so myself  :ok:

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 29/08/07)

I didn't think the intro was too low, but as I mainly listen to my stuff on in-ear headphones, I tend to hear it at its optimum level, indeed I mix it to sound best on my headphones because I enjoy listening to it that way :)

Glad you enjoyed the track!  :yey:

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 29/08/07)

I am not fond of giving negative criticism to your project Thingfish, because I do not want to discourage you. But it would be dishonest of me to only speak about the tracks that I like!

I totally do not like (nor understand) your choice of tone when you sing the chorus.
I'll try to explain.

Ju das my guide   Bruce sings "das" in a lower tone than "Ju", you might have misheard it, misinterpretated it, or changed it on purpose? Also "my" and "guide" are different.

In my ears it doesn't fit. My least favourite of all your recordings. Hope you don't mind! Just my 2 cents.

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 29/08/07)

I'm afraid it is you who have misheard it, Foro, Bruce doubles his own vocal on the chorus and both parts go up on the syllable '-das'. The main vocal line starts on F (Ju-), goes up to G (-das), goes to E (my) and back to F (guide). I did exactly the same, so there is no discrepancy  :S

What you will have heard is the lower harmony (the second voice) coming up to the E on -das which is the note lower than the first one in the main vocal line, giving you the illusion that the main vocal line goes down. It doesn't, though.

In my version, I preferred to choose two higher harmonies in two background voices, so I didn't add Bruce's second voice. I can only apologize for that  :( I'll see if I can add in the lower harmony you like and send it to you :)

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 29/08/07)

Thanks for the explanation, but you really do not have to apologize! :)

I guess you described this very well:

"What you will have heard is the lower harmony (the second voice) coming up to the E on -das which is the note lower than the first one in the main vocal line, giving you the illusion that the main vocal line goes down. It doesn't, though."

Seems that Bruce's lower harmony (second voice) has always been very leading, or at least dominant to me, fitting in my ears better to the chords in the music!

Still, illusion or not, the combo that you explained, formed a "total" single melody line in my head, as you described. The notes are there!

I think that, if one chooses for a single vocal, that it would fit better to go down instead of up. Hope you understand what I mean (making one vocal out of the two vocals: a combination). ;)

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 29/08/07)

It's certainly interesting that different people hear different melody lines out of a combination of harmonies, Foro. I've sung it my way for 15 years now, as I'm sure you have too  :D

Anyway, I've added the lower harmony into an extra special version of the track which I hope you'll be able to enjoy a bit more now!  :yey:

Wow, did I really deserve this? :)

But indeed I like it better like this! I feel honoured!   B)
