I guess you described this very well:

Seems that Bruce's lower harmony (second voice) has always been very
leading, or at least dominant to me, fitting in my ears better to the chords in the music!
Still, illusion or not, the combo that you explained, formed a "total" single melody line in my head, as you described. The notes are there!
I think that, if one chooses for a
single vocal, that it would fit better to go down instead of up. Hope you understand what I mean (making one vocal out of the two vocals: a combination).
