Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 05/10/08)

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 29/08/07)

Did it sound more like you sing it this time around, Foro? :) And of course you deserve it, you've listened to lots of my tracks for a long time  :yey:

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 29/08/07)

Hey, I checked it out, this newer version does sound better! :yey:

The chorus sounds more clearer and the intro sounds sweeter! Great job!

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 29/08/07)

Erm, MD, I didn't change a single thing in the intro!  Must just be your fresh ears listening to it his morning :)

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 29/08/07)

It's the end of an era...the 'Thingfish's acoustic versions of all the Blaze songs' era that is :)

I took the decision not to bother making a recording of Maiden's cover of The Who's 'My Generation', not only because the original track is pretty uninspiring and very repetitive, but also because the Maiden version doesn't really add anything 'Maidenic' to it, it's just a straight cover. I doubt that I could have added anything to the song, especially if the greatest band in the world doesn't really manage it!

That said, we come to my final Blaze-era track and it's one that is hardly ever mentioned on any Maiden forum I've been to, which is a crime because it is a superb little rocker. I suppose one reason it's not talked about much is that it was only available on the picture disc of 'Man On The Edge' or on the 2-cd Japanese version of 'The X Factor' and simply not that many Maiden fans have it, I guess.

Anyway, if you don't have it, I hope my version makes you go and listen to the original which is, of course, far better! :) Here it is...

And that was the Blaze era, now we can look forward to some Bruce era gems! :)

I am not sure about that! Nicko's drums in the chorus have always annoyed me tremendously. Now they're gone! Besides, it's a nice rhythm guitar rocker, excellent for acoustic guitars! I like the vocals a lot! Also those screams in between!  :)

Of minor importance, but just wondering:
I understand that you have personal views (probably not the most positive ones  :P ) on some tracks that Maiden did, but I do hope you realize that you won't be complete this way. Also, it's not very consequent, since you selected other covers. Is Doctor Doctor really a less straight cover than My Generation?

What do you mean with these tracks: 'Age Of Innocence (How Old?)' & 'Bayswater Ain't A Bad Place To Be'. Must have missed something!  :S

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 09/09/07)

I don't have many negative views on tracks that Maiden have done, Foro. In the case of 'My Generation', though, I don't feel there is much that really denotes it as being Maiden apart from the naturally far better instrumental skills they have compared to The Who. Most of what has been added to the song is in Nicko's drum parts which would be rather difficult for me to reproduce accurately in one of my acoustic versions, so I decided I would probably just miss that one out. 'Doctor, Doctor' is a fairly straightforward cover, indeed, but it's also a much better song :) Now, I know that my project would not be 100% complete, but as I'm already not re-doing some other tracks, it would have been that way anyway!  :(

As for 'Age Of Innocence (How Old?)' and 'Bayswater Ain't A Bad Place To Be', I'm surprised you've not heard of them :) The first track is on the b-side of the 'No more Lies' single and the second is one on the single for 'Be Quick Or Be Dead'. Better go and find them!! :)

That's exactly what I meant. You're selective. I respect that of course.

I have the "Be Quick Or Be Dead" single (bought it when it came out), and I think I know what track you're talking about. It's the hidden track. However, I never heard of the title you mentioned. I am pretty convinced that you won't find this title on any official Maiden object nor on any official Maiden reference or liable source. Someone made this title up (probably ripped the track off the single, put it on a bootleg, giving it a name), but it wasn't Maiden, I reckon.

Now the other title 'Age Of Innocence (How Old?)' I totally forgot about. Silly indeed! ;)

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 09/09/07)

Certainly, every mention I've heard of the hidden track following 'Space Station No. 9' calls it 'Bayswater Ain't A Bad Place To Be', including the 'Iron Maiden Commentary' and its Wikipedia article :

http://www.maidenfans.com/imc/?url=sing ... eng#track3

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Be_Quick_or_Be_Dead

but as it is just the extension of the previous song, no, I doubt there is an official listing of the title. Bruce does mention it in the song, though, and the fact that it's a joke on Yorkshire people coupled with idea of it being borrowed from the AC/DC song title 'Hell Ain't A Bad Place to Be' (i.e. Bayswater = Hell :) ) is a real Brucie/Rod idea

As for being selective, I only really wanted to record all the Maiden-written songs and any of their covers that I felt I could add something extra to. I just didn't feel that with 'My Generation', I guess.

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 09/09/07)

..and other tracks (I read the text at the bottom of your site).

But I understand you well now. It is something personal as well, of course. :)

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 09/09/07)

In the case of the other tracks it is really because I can't do impressions of Nicko, Vic Vella, Rod or Steve  :D Those tracks are so unique in their versions, no-one should ever attempt to recreate them!

Anyway, what did you dislike about Nicko's drumming in 'I Live My Way'?

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 09/09/07)

The way he hits his hi-hat. The whole rhythm pattern I find a bit too simplistic as well.

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 09/09/07)

Thingfish...you are a genius.

I recently flew from Sydney to Detroit for work and I played your tunes on my ipod for over 14 hours....!

My classic Thingfish playlist includes: Lord of The Flies, Flight of Icarus, The Duellists, Innocent Exile, The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Caught Somewhere in Time, The Longest Day, The Sign of the Cross, Sea of Madness, 2 Minutes to Midnight, Fear of the Dark, Face In The Sand and Deja Vu.

The lead breaks are incredible....keep 'em comin'!!  Its time for another AMOLAD epic...or from Somewhere in Time.

Thanks mate....brilliant stuff. :ok:

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 09/09/07)

Well, that makes me very proud indeed, TMDR, thank you very much! :) I'm very glad you like my stuff enough to play them for that long!  :yey: It's not yet time for an AMOLAD or SIT track, but I'm in the middle of another absolute classic, but it's a biggie, so it might take a good few days...  -_-

Finally I've got a chance to  comment on a Thingfish acoustic cover while it is still rather fresh. This was a very nice rendition of Mother Russia, Thingy, a long military applause from me. Klapp, klapp as we would say in Norwegian. The solo sounded very nice on an acoustic. Well, I've had some beer tonight and I'm about to go to bed, but when I checked the forum and found a new TAMC (Thingfish Acoustic Maiden Cover) had been released, I had to listen to it. And now I can go to bed happy. Thank you, Thingy!

Re: Thingfish's Acoustic Maiden Covers (new track added : 21/09/07)

Maiden and beer, what better combination is there? :D

Well, maybe Maiden and a hot young woman, such as my beautiful little Spanish groupie, Nessa, but still... :) Here's a pic of her and you'll see what I mean ;)

That's the type of pic she sends me regularly from Spain...it is definitely a blessing sometimes having a music project that people all over the world enjoy :)
