The Future Past Tour 2024

Parchment is what you get if you throw a bunch of reunion era Maiden songs into AI and tell it to churn out a new one.
This can be said for many songs by many bands.
And it really takes the listener on a journey, and that’s an accomplishment itself.
Probably the most important thing for me in a song. Memorable and melodic chorus too. I'm really curious with what kind of chorus Steve would have come up for it, although the great instrumental section would probably be shorter then.

How on earth did you arrive at this conclusion? Because they're both about civilizations that built pyramids?

They're completely different tempos, meters, and feels- musically speaking, they are almost nothing alike.
The only part of Book of Souls I find similar to Powerslave is the solo section, where there are some eerily similar riffs for a few seconds and I'm transported to the Powerslave solo section...but again, just for a few seconds. Other than that, the two I find pretty unrelated.

To me Parchment reminds Rainbow's Stargazer a lot. Both are long hypnotic songs with great athmosphere. Lots of repetions that seem to go nowhere but that's the point with those songs. Just mesmerizing music to enjoy. Yep, Parchment is no Fear in terms of crowd involvement, but it has it's own magic. And maybe it's meant to be enjoyed with headphones to create pictures in your head.

Stargazer pisses all over The Parchment (getting it really wet and soggy) and most other metal songs. :edmetal: :edmetal:
I think Stargazer is going to win the Best Metal Song Cup and we're at least a year away from figuring that out officially. It truly is a great track.

I really like The Parchment and I hope they decide to play it live, but I suspect no changes for 2024.

Sorry I had to rewrite this post like three times so I wouldn’t say something too hostile. “The Parchment” is the second best Iron Maiden song, the best being “Rime of the Ancient Mariner”. It is a track that plunges you into its atmosphere as Middle Eastern waves ripple along your journey in the pits of the night, only to see the dawn break on the horizon at the very end. It is everything good about Steve Harris’s writing wrapped up into one twelve minute masterclass. All repetition works to fully involve you in this beast and not a moment is wasted. This is the pinnacle of modern Maiden songwriting and one of the band’s most captivating songs overall. A joy to listen to every time.

Either that one, Puppets or Painkiller.
Would be cool to have a dark horse winner though.

I agree. Only the vibe of the riffs a bit. As a song structure, Book Of Souls is like Seventh Son.
the last time i checked spotify it was the least listened to track on the album
Time Machine?

Good comparison, especially about the atmosphere of both songs. Parchment has a Nomad vibe, but the melodic riffs are unique.

Stargazer is eternal song.

Yep, and we can say the same about Hell On Earth.

Im glad you enjoy it but im staggered you think its the 2nd best. Id honestly put it bottom of my all time Maiden list, i think its that poor. Strange how opinions differ so much. Mind you i actually like Weekend Warrior which most people say sucks

Painkiller? What a risible song this is...

Painkiller is a real pain killer. ;) Each time I'm listening to this song, it's always when something bad happens in my life and it helps me to get through the pain that I feel when I feel it. So no, it's not a risible song at all.

Of course, all Maiden songs help me the same way. They helped me a lot when I was a teenager in the 90's... The same way Painkiller is doing it for 5 years, now.

I’m not going to weigh in on the The Parchment debate, as I don’t have strong feelings about the song one way or the other. But I wanted to second what you said about Weekend Warrior. That song rocks!
