Maybe in SOL, the cowbell was in fact a synth effect played by Steve because Nicko does not have one anymore.

Me neither. I will, however, re-read them all when I've given the album the proper 3-4 listens. All I know right now is that most(all?) of the reviews have been rather positive and that's enough to make me happy.
